नाग पंचमी इस वर्ष सोमवार, 17 अगस्त 2026 को है — सावन (श्रावण) मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की पंचमी। इस बार का संयोग विशेष है: नाग पंचमी सावन सोमवार के दिन पड़ रही है — अर्थात् जिस दिन नाग देवता की पूजा होगी, उसी दिन उनके स्वामी भगवान शिव का प्रिय सोमवार व्रत भी रहेगा। शिव के कण्ठ के वासुकि और नागों की पूजा एक ही दिन — ऐसा अवसर भक्तों के लिए दुर्लभ है। जिनकी कुंडली में काल सर्प दोष या राहु-केतु की पीड़ा है, उनके लिए भी यह दिन शांति-पूजा का सर्वोत्तम मुहूर्त माना जाता है। आइए जानें तिथि, पूजा मुहूर्त, द्वादश नाग, प्रामाणिक पूजा विधि, मंत्र, नियम व सावधानियाँ।
नाग पंचमी का महत्व
श्रावण शुक्ल पंचमी को नाग देवताओं की पूजा का विधान है। हमारी परंपरा में नाग केवल सर्प नहीं — शेषनाग पर श्रीहरि विश्राम करते हैं, वासुकि महादेव के कण्ठ का हार हैं और समुद्र-मंथन के नेति (रस्सी) बने थे, और भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कालिय नाग का मान-मर्दन कर उसे अभय भी दिया। वर्षा-ऋतु में जब सर्प बिलों से बाहर आते हैं, तब यह पर्व मनुष्य और सृष्टि के इन रहस्यमय जीवों के बीच सम्मान व अभय का सम्बन्ध स्थापित करता है। मान्यता है कि नाग पंचमी की पूजा से सर्प-भय दूर होता है, कुल पर आए सर्प-शाप शांत होते हैं और घर-परिवार की रक्षा होती है।

द्वादश नाग — किनकी पूजा होती है?
शास्त्रों में नाग पंचमी पर इन बारह नागों के पूजन का विधान है: अनन्त, वासुकि, शेष, पद्म, कम्बल, कर्कोटक, अश्वतर, धृतराष्ट्र, शंखपाल, कालिय, तक्षक और पिंगल। इनमें नौ नाग-नामों का स्मरण "नव नाग स्तोत्र" के रूप में प्रातः करने की परंपरा है — इसका मंत्र नीचे दिया गया है।
नाग पंचमी की पूजा विधि
- प्रातः स्नान व संकल्प: सूर्योदय से पूर्व स्नान कर स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनें; चूँकि सावन सोमवार भी है, शिव-स्मरण के साथ व्रत-पूजा का संकल्प लें।
- नाग प्रतिमा/चित्र स्थापना: पूजा-स्थान पर या मुख्य द्वार के दोनों ओर गोबर, गीली मिट्टी अथवा हल्दी-चंदन से नाग-आकृति बनाएँ, या धातु/मिट्टी की नाग प्रतिमा अथवा चित्र रखें।
- पंचोपचार पूजन: जल, अक्षत, हल्दी, चंदन, दूर्वा व पुष्प अर्पित करें; धूप-दीप जलाएँ।
- दूध-अर्पण: कच्चे दूध में घी व शहद मिलाकर नाग प्रतिमा को अर्पित करें (जीवित सर्प को नहीं — नीचे सावधानियाँ देखें)। खीर, सेवई व भीगे चने-धान का नैवेद्य लगाएँ।
- मंत्र-जप व स्तोत्र: नीचे दिए नाग पंचमी मंत्र व नव नाग स्तोत्र का पाठ करें; सावन सोमवार होने से "ॐ नमः शिवाय" की एक माला अवश्य जपें।
- शिवलिंग अभिषेक: शिव मंदिर जाकर या घर पर शिवलिंग का जल व दूध से अभिषेक करें — नाग शिव के आभूषण हैं, अतः दोनों की पूजा का फल एक-दूसरे को पूर्ण करता है।
- कथा व आरती: नाग पंचमी की कथा (आस्तीक मुनि की कथा) पढ़ें/सुनें और आरती कर क्षमा-प्रार्थना के साथ पूजा पूर्ण करें।

नाग पंचमी और काल सर्प दोष
ज्योतिष में जब कुंडली के सभी सात ग्रह राहु-केतु की धुरी के एक ओर आ जाते हैं, तो उसे काल सर्प योग/दोष कहा जाता है — राहु को सर्प का मुख और केतु को पुच्छ माना गया है। ऐसे जातकों को बार-बार बनते-बिगड़ते काम, स्वप्न में सर्प दिखना, संतान या विवाह में विलम्ब जैसे अनुभव कहे जाते हैं। परंपरा के अनुसार नाग पंचमी काल सर्प दोष की शांति-पूजा के लिए वर्ष का सर्वोत्तम दिन है — इस दिन नाग देवता की विधिवत पूजा, "सर्वे नागाः…" मंत्र का जप, शिव-अभिषेक तथा किसी योग्य ब्राह्मण/गुरु से राहु-केतु जप व नाग-बलि (प्रतीकात्मक, शास्त्रोक्त) कराना शुभ माना जाता है। ध्यान रहे — काल सर्प दोष है या नहीं, यह पूरी कुंडली देखकर ही तय होता है; केवल भय के आधार पर कोई अनुष्ठान न करें। आप अपनी निःशुल्क कुंडली बनवाकर या हमारा काल सर्प दोष लेख पढ़कर पहले स्थिति समझें।
नियम व सावधानियाँ
- जीवित सर्प को दूध न पिलाएँ। दूध सर्पों का स्वाभाविक आहार नहीं है — यह उनके लिए हानिकारक है। शास्त्र-सम्मत विधि नाग प्रतिमा या चित्र पर दूध अर्पित करने की है; भाव ही पूजा का प्राण है। सपेरों से सर्प छुड़वाकर पूजा करवाना भी जीव-हिंसा को बढ़ावा देता है।
- नाग पंचमी के दिन भूमि खोदना, हल चलाना व नींव डालना वर्जित है — बिलों में रहने वाले जीवों को अभय देने का यही भाव है। इसी कारण इस दिन सुई-धागे का काम और लोहे की कड़ाही-तवे पर भोजन बनाने से भी कई परिवार परहेज़ रखते हैं (कुल-परंपरा अनुसार पालन करें)।
- सर्प दिख जाए तो उसे मारें नहीं, छेड़ें नहीं — दूर से प्रणाम कर हट जाएँ; आवश्यक हो तो वन-विभाग/सर्प-मित्र को सूचित करें।
- व्रत रखने वाले तामसिक भोजन (मांस, मदिरा, प्याज-लहसुन), क्रोध व असत्य से दूर रहें; सावन सोमवार का संयम भी साथ निभाएँ।
- ऊपर दिए सभी मंत्र सर्व-सुलभ व सुरक्षित हैं। किसी उग्र बीज-मंत्र या तांत्रिक प्रयोग को केवल योग्य गुरु के मार्गदर्शन में ही आरंभ करें।
शास्त्र-कथा — आस्तीक मुनि और नागों का अभय
महाभारत की जनमेजय-कथा नाग पंचमी का मूल है। राजा परीक्षित की मृत्यु तक्षक नाग के दंश से हुई, तो उनके पुत्र जनमेजय ने क्रोध में सर्प-सत्र यज्ञ आरंभ किया, जिसमें सर्प खिंचे चले आकर आहुति बनने लगे। तब नाग-माता के वचन से बँधे आस्तीक मुनि — जिनकी माता स्वयं नाग-कन्या जरत्कारु थीं — यज्ञ-स्थल पहुँचे। उनकी विद्वत्ता से प्रसन्न होकर जनमेजय ने वर माँगने को कहा, और आस्तीक ने यज्ञ रोकने का वर माँग लिया। जिस दिन नागों को यह अभय-दान मिला, वह श्रावण शुक्ल पंचमी थी। तभी से यह तिथि नागों के प्रति कृतज्ञता व अभय का पर्व है — यह कथा सिखाती है कि क्रोध का उत्तर विनाश नहीं, विद्या और करुणा है।

Why Nag Panchami Matters
Shravan Shukla Panchami is ordained for the worship of the serpent deities. In our tradition the Naga is far more than a snake — Shri Hari rests upon Sheshnag, Vasuki is the garland of Mahadeva's neck and became the churning-rope of the ocean, and Shri Krishna subdued the Kaliya naga yet granted him refuge. In the rainy season, when serpents emerge from their burrows, this festival establishes a bond of respect and non-fear between humans and these mysterious beings of creation. It is held that Nag Panchami worship removes fear of serpents, pacifies serpent-related afflictions upon a family line, and protects the household.

The Twelve Nagas — Who Is Worshipped?
The shastras ordain the worship of these twelve Nagas on Nag Panchami: Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya, Takshaka and Pingala. Of these, nine naga-names are remembered each morning as the "Nav Nag Stotra" — the mantra is given below.
Nag Panchami — Puja Vidhi
- Morning bath & sankalpa: bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes; since it is also Sawan Somwar, take the vow of the vrat-puja while remembering Shiva.
- Installing the Naga image: at the puja place, or on both sides of the main door, draw a serpent figure with cow-dung, wet clay or turmeric-sandal paste, or place a metal/clay Naga murti or picture.
- Panchopachar worship: offer water, akshata, turmeric, sandal, durva grass and flowers; light incense and a lamp.
- Milk offering: offer raw milk mixed with ghee and honey to the Naga image (never to a live snake — see the cautions below). Offer kheer, sevai and soaked grams-grains as naivedya.
- Mantra-japa & stotra: recite the Nag Panchami mantra and the Nav Nag Stotra given below; being Sawan Somwar, also chant one mala of "Om Namah Shivaya".
- Shivalinga abhishek: at a Shiva temple or at home, bathe the Shivalinga with water and milk — the Nagas are Shiva's ornaments, so each worship completes the fruit of the other.
- Katha & aarti: read or hear the Nag Panchami katha (the story of Astika Muni) and close with aarti and a prayer for forgiveness.

Nag Panchami and Kaal Sarp Dosh
In Jyotish, when all seven planets of a kundli fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, it is called Kaal Sarp Yoga/Dosh — Rahu is regarded as the serpent's mouth and Ketu its tail. Such natives are said to experience work that repeatedly forms and breaks, serpents seen in dreams, and delays in marriage or progeny. By tradition, Nag Panchami is the best day of the year for the shanti-puja of Kaal Sarp Dosh — proper worship of the Nag Devtas, japa of the "Sarve Nagah…" mantra, Shiva-abhishek, and Rahu-Ketu japa with a symbolic, scripture-ordained nag-bali performed through a qualified brahmin or guru are held auspicious on this day. Remember — whether Kaal Sarp Dosh exists at all can be determined only by examining the full kundli; never undertake a ritual out of fear alone. Niyams & Cautions
- Never feed milk to a live snake. Milk is not a serpent's natural food — it harms them. The scripture-sanctioned way is to offer milk upon the Naga image or picture; the inner bhava is the life of the worship. Having snake-charmers bring captive snakes for worship also promotes cruelty to the creature.
- On Nag Panchami, digging the earth, ploughing and laying foundations are forbidden — the spirit is to grant safety to the creatures living in burrows. For the same reason many families also avoid needle-and-thread work and cooking on iron pans this day (follow your family tradition).
- If you see a snake, do not kill or provoke it — bow from a distance and move away; if needed, inform the forest department or a snake-rescuer.
- Those keeping the vrat should give up tamasic food (meat, alcohol, onion-garlic), anger and untruth; keep the restraint of Sawan Somwar alongside.
- All the mantras above are universal and safe. Begin any fierce seed-mantra or tantric prayoga only under the guidance of a qualified guru.
A Scripture Story — Astika Muni and the Refuge of the Nagas
The Janamejaya episode of the Mahabharata is the root of Nag Panchami. When King Parikshit died of the bite of Takshaka naga, his son Janamejaya in fury began the Sarpa-satra — a sacrifice into which serpents were drawn and consumed. Then came Astika Muni, whose mother Jaratkaru was herself of the naga line, bound by his word to the serpent-mother. Pleased by the young sage's learning, Janamejaya offered him a boon — and Astika asked that the sacrifice be stopped. The day the Nagas received that gift of abhaya (fearlessness) was Shravan Shukla Panchami. Ever since, this tithi has been a festival of gratitude and refuge toward the Nagas — teaching that the answer to anger is not destruction but wisdom and compassion.
