The second solar eclipse of the year falls on Wednesday, 12 August 2026 — and it is a total solar eclipse. The same day is Shravan Amavasya (Hariyali Amavasya), which is why millions in India want to know whether Sutak will apply, whether temples will close, whether cooking and puja are restricted, and what precautions pregnant women should take. The answer is clear and worth knowing precisely: this eclipse will not be visible anywhere in India, and therefore no Sutak period applies in India. Below are the astronomical reason, the scriptural basis, the correct timings in Indian Standard Time, and what you should actually do on 12 August.

Why This Eclipse Cannot Be Seen from India

A solar eclipse is visible only where the Moon's shadow actually falls on the Earth — and that shadow can only land on the daylight half of the planet. On 12 August 2026 the shadow sweeps from the Arctic across Greenland and Iceland to northern Spain, where it will be afternoon and early evening.

On Indian clocks the very same event runs from about 9 PM to 1:28 AM the next morning — the middle of the night. At that hour the Sun is far below the Indian horizon. If the Sun is not in the sky, there is nothing to be eclipsed. That is why Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Ujjain and Haridwar will see no phase of it whatsoever. The India Meteorological Department's annual eclipse listing likewise places this eclipse in the "not visible in India" category.

Sutak Kaal — What the Shastra Actually Says

This is where the confusion spreads every year, so let the rule be stated plainly.

In the dharmashastra and nibandha tradition, Sutak is tied to the visible eclipse — the observance applies only where the eclipse can actually be seen. An eclipse that never rises above your horizon creates no ritual Sutak for you. This is precisely why panchang-makers always print "visible / not visible at such-and-such place" alongside every eclipse.

  • By the general rule, Sutak for a solar eclipse begins four prahar (about 12 hours) before first contact.
  • Sutak for a lunar eclipse begins three prahar (about 9 hours) before.
  • But this reckoning applies only where the eclipse is visible.

Since the eclipse of 12 August 2026 is nowhere visible in India, no Sutak applies here. In practical terms:

  • Temples remain open at their usual hours; there is no scriptural ground for closing the doors.
  • No eclipse-related restriction on cooking, eating or drinking water.
  • Puja, havan, japa and mantra sadhana all continue at their normal muhurat.
  • Eclipse-time customs such as placing tulsi leaves or darbha grass in food are not required.
  • Grahan-snan and grahan-daan are prescribed only where the eclipse is visible — in India, the merit of this day flows from the Amavasya, not from the eclipse.
🤰 For pregnant women: Every traditional eclipse precaution is likewise tied to visibility. This eclipse is not visible in India, so no eclipse-related precaution applies here. Families with their own kula tradition may of course keep it by choice — but there is no cause for fear or guilt. For any health question, please consult your own doctor.

Then What Makes 12 August Important? — Hariyali Amavasya

Even without the eclipse, 12 August 2026 is a deeply meritorious day in its own right — the Amavasya of Shravan, called Hariyali Amavasya in North India. Sawan belongs entirely to Shiva, and Amavasya is the tithi both of the ancestors and of Shakti upasana. By the panchang the Amavasya tithi begins in the small hours of 12 August (around 1:52 AM) and runs until about 11:06 PM the same night — do check the panchang for your own city.

What to Do on the Day — Step by Step

  1. Morning bath & sankalpa: Rise before sunrise and bathe; add a few drops of Gangajal to the water if you can. Take water and akshat in the hand and make your sankalpa.
  2. Arghya to Surya: Offer water to the Sun from a copper vessel. Surya is the karaka of both the father and the ancestors, so this act is held especially fruitful on Amavasya.
  3. Pitru tarpan: Facing south, offer water mixed with black sesame to the ancestors. Anyone unfamiliar with the formal vidhi may simply offer water and til with shraddha, saying "May you be satisfied, O ancestors."
  4. Shiva puja: It is a Sawan Amavasya — offer water, milk, bel-patra, dhatura and white flowers on the Shivalinga.
  5. Deepdan: At dusk, light a mustard-oil lamp near a peepal or tulsi.
  6. Plant a tree: The loveliest custom of Hariyali Amavasya — plant a peepal, banyan, neem, bel, amla or tulsi. Tradition counts this as the finest "daan" of the tithi.
  7. Charity: Give grain, clothing, an umbrella, black sesame or a water vessel. Feeding someone hungry stands above all of it.
  8. Japa: Keep your ishta mantra running mentally through the day.

Authentic Mantras

The mantras below are widely available, scripturally well established, and householders may chant them without any diksha.

Surya Gayatri — for the worship of the Sun, the grace of the ancestors and inner strength
Pitru Gayatri — chanted alongside tarpan and shraddha rites on Amavasya
The Panchakshara — the finest and safest mantra of the month of Sawan
The beeja-bearing name mantra of Maa Kali — Amavasya is the tithi of Shakti upasana

Myths That Circulate at Every Eclipse

  • "Wherever the eclipse occurs, Sutak applies everywhere" — false. Sutak follows visibility, not the mere astronomical occurrence.
  • "Temples should close even for an invisible eclipse" — there is no scriptural basis for this. Where an eclipse is not visible, the doors are not closed.
  • "An eclipse necessarily brings misfortune" — an eclipse is an astronomical event. The shastras treat it as a special occasion for japa, tapa and daan rather than for fear — and even that only where it is visible.
  • "Watching it online causes Sutak" — no. The scriptural reckoning concerns direct sight; watching a live stream carries no Sutak.
  • If you are abroad — and happen to be in Europe, Iceland, Spain or the part of North America where the eclipse is visible, then Sutak and the eclipse observances do apply to you there, by local time. In that case never look at the Sun with the naked eye — use only certified solar filters.

The Eclipses That Follow

EclipseDateIn India
Total solar eclipse12 August 2026Not visible — no Sutak
Partial lunar eclipse28 August 2026Not visible — no Sutak
Solar eclipse2 August 2027Per panchang calculations, visible in India as a partial eclipse — Sutak will genuinely apply then

Worth noting: the lunar eclipse of 28 August 2026 falls on Raksha Bandhan — but it too is not visible from India, so the rakhi muhurat is unaffected by it. The thing to watch that day is Bhadra kaal, not the eclipse.

One Thing Worth Remembering

Far more fear is spread about eclipses than the shastras ever taught. In the Sanatana view an eclipse is a sandhi — a junction of time, and junctions have always been held fit for japa, dhyana, silence and charity. Where an eclipse is visible, sadhakas give that window to mantra japa; where it is not, the day runs as usual. For a sadhaka in India this 12 August the message is simple: set the eclipse aside and take the merit of the Amavasya. Bathe, offer water to your ancestors, plant a tree, and take Shiva's name. That is the real fruit of this tithi.

📿 Please note: Everything given here rests on shastra, tradition and established astronomical computation. Panchangs may differ slightly on tithi and timings — do check the panchang for your own city. No form of worship should be treated as a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
