इस वर्ष विश्वकर्मा पूजा गुरुवार, 17 सितम्बर 2026 को है। ध्यान देने योग्य बात यह है कि यह पर्व चंद्र-तिथि से नहीं, सौर गणना से तय होता है — यह कन्या संक्रांति के दिन आता है, जब सूर्य सिंह राशि छोड़कर कन्या राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं। इसीलिए विश्वकर्मा पूजा हर वर्ष लगभग एक ही तारीख — 16 या 17 सितम्बर — को पड़ती है, जबकि शेष अधिकांश पर्व तिथि के साथ आगे-पीछे खिसकते रहते हैं। इस लेख में पर्व का वैदिक आधार, औज़ार-मशीन-वाहन पूजन की पूर्ण विधि, प्रामाणिक मंत्र, संक्रांति पुण्य काल का नियम तथा वे सावधानियाँ हैं जो प्रायः नहीं बतायी जातीं।

भगवान विश्वकर्मा कौन हैं — वैदिक आधार
विश्वकर्मा केवल लोक-परंपरा के देवता नहीं हैं। ऋग्वेद के दसवें मण्डल में दो पूरे सूक्त — 10.81 तथा 10.82 — विश्वकर्मा को समर्पित हैं, जिन्हें विश्वकर्मा सूक्त कहा जाता है। वहाँ उन्हें समस्त भुवनों का रचयिता, विश्वतश्चक्षुः (सब ओर नेत्र वाला), विश्वतोमुख (सब ओर मुख वाला) तथा पिता व धाता कहा गया है। यह वैदिक विश्वकर्मा एक दार्शनिक अवधारणा हैं — वह चेतना जो सृष्टि को गढ़ती है।
पुराण-परंपरा में यही तत्त्व देव-शिल्पी के रूप में मूर्त होता है। पुराणों व महाभारत की कथाओं में उनसे इंद्र की अमरावती, द्वारका नगरी, पुष्पक विमान तथा देवताओं के दिव्यास्त्रों की रचना जोड़ी जाती है। इसी कारण अभियंता, शिल्पी, बढ़ई, लोहार, कुम्हार, बुनकर, मैकेनिक, वास्तुकार, चालक तथा कारखाने के श्रमिक — सभी उन्हें अपना अधिष्ठाता मानते हैं।
कन्या संक्रांति का महत्व
संक्रांति का अर्थ है सूर्य का एक राशि से दूसरी राशि में संक्रमण। कन्या संक्रांति पर सूर्य कन्या राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं — यह बुध की राशि है, जिसका स्वभाव विश्लेषण, कौशल, सूक्ष्मता व शिल्प है। परंपरा में इसी सामंजस्य के कारण शिल्प-देवता का पूजन इस दिन जोड़ा गया।
- स्नान-दान: पुण्य काल में स्नान, अन्न-वस्त्र दान तथा सूर्य को जल-अर्घ्य का विशेष महत्व।
- ऋतु-संधि: संक्रांति ऋतु-परिवर्तन का बिंदु है — इन दिनों आहार हल्का व सात्त्विक रखें, अनावश्यक यात्रा व अति-श्रम से बचें।
- सौर मास: इसी दिन सिंह मास समाप्त होकर कन्या (सौर आश्विन) मास आरंभ होता है।
औज़ार-यंत्र पूजन की पूर्ण विधि
एक दिन पहले
- कार्यस्थल, दुकान, कार्यशाला या कारखाने की पूर्ण सफ़ाई करें। कबाड़, टूटे पुर्ज़े व बेकार सामान हटा दें।
- औज़ारों, मशीनों व वाहनों को साफ़ करें — धूल, ग्रीस व जंग हटाएँ। यही इस पर्व की असली पूजा है।
- पूजा-सामग्री एकत्र करें: कलश, आम्रपल्लव, नारियल, अक्षत, रोली-हल्दी-कुंकुम, कलावा, पुष्प, धूप-दीप, फल, मिष्ठान्न, पंचामृत।
पूजा के दिन
- स्नान व संकल्प: प्रातः स्नान कर स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करें। हाथ में जल, अक्षत व पुष्प लेकर संकल्प लें — स्थान, तिथि व उद्देश्य (कौशल, सुरक्षा व सद्-आजीविका) का उच्चारण करते हुए।
- कलश स्थापना: पूर्व या उत्तर दिशा में चौकी पर लाल वस्त्र बिछाकर जल-भरा कलश रखें, उसमें आम्रपल्लव व ऊपर नारियल स्थापित करें। साथ में भगवान विश्वकर्मा का चित्र या प्रतिमा रखें।
- गणपति-स्मरण: किसी भी पूजन का आरंभ श्रीगणेश-स्मरण से — ॐ गं गणपतये नमः।
- आवाहन व उपचार: भगवान विश्वकर्मा का आवाहन कर यथाशक्ति उपचार अर्पित करें — आसन, जल, गंध, अक्षत, पुष्प, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य।
- औज़ार पूजन: औज़ारों, मशीनों व वाहनों पर हल्दी-कुंकुम का तिलक करें, कलावा बाँधें, पुष्प अर्पित करें। जिस औज़ार से आपकी रोटी चलती है, उसे प्रणाम करें।
- मंत्र-जप: मूल मंत्र की कम-से-कम एक माला (108) करें।
- आरती व प्रसाद: आरती कर नैवेद्य अर्पित करें, फिर सभी सहकर्मियों व श्रमिकों में प्रसाद वितरित करें। सहभोज इस पर्व की आत्मा है।
प्रामाणिक मंत्र
तन्नो विश्वकर्मा प्रचोदयात्॥प्रचलित विश्वकर्मा गायत्री — कौशल, बुद्धि व निर्माण-सामर्थ्य हेतु।
वेद-पाठ के इच्छुक साधक ऋग्वेद के विश्वकर्मा सूक्त (10.81–10.82) का पाठ किसी जानकार आचार्य के मार्गदर्शन में कर सकते हैं। वैदिक मंत्रों में स्वर (उदात्त-अनुदात्त) का महत्व होता है — बिना गुरु-शिक्षा के अनुमान से वैदिक पाठ न करें। नाम-मंत्र व गायत्री-शैली के मंत्र सभी के लिए खुले व सुरक्षित हैं।
मुहूर्त व नियम
- समय: मुख्य पूजन प्रातः से मध्याह्न के बीच, संक्रांति के पुण्य काल में करें। राहुकाल व यमगण्ड टालें — स्थानीय पंचांग से देख लें।
- दिशा: साधक का मुख पूर्व या उत्तर की ओर।
- आहार: पूजन तक निराहार या फलाहार; उपवास अनिवार्य नहीं। पूजा के बाद सात्त्विक सहभोज।
- मशीन विश्राम: परंपरा में इस दिन मशीनें बंद रखी जाती हैं — कृतज्ञता का प्रतीक। जहाँ संभव न हो (अस्पताल, बिजली, परिवहन), प्रातः पूजन कर कार्य किया जा सकता है।
- सहभागिता: श्रमिकों, सहायकों व चालकों को अवश्य सम्मिलित करें। शिल्प-देवता का पूजन उन्हें छोड़कर अधूरा है जिनके हाथ काम करते हैं।
सावधानियाँ — जो प्रायः नहीं बतायी जातीं
- सुरक्षा पूजा का विकल्प नहीं: पूजा कर लेने से खराब वायरिंग, घिसा बेल्ट या टूटा गार्ड ठीक नहीं होता। इस दिन का सच्चा संकल्प है — मशीनों की वास्तविक जाँच व मरम्मत। यही विश्वकर्मा की सबसे प्रिय पूजा है।
- चलते पुर्ज़ों पर तेल-सिंदूर न लगाएँ: मोटर, बेल्ट, गियर व विद्युत बिंदुओं पर तेल, सिंदूर या कलावा लगाना दुर्घटना का कारण बन सकता है। प्रतीक-रूप में मशीन के स्थिर भाग पर तिलक पर्याप्त है।
- अग्नि-सावधानी: कारखाने, आरा-मशीन, पेंट या रसायन के पास खुला दीपक-हवन न करें। ऐसे स्थानों पर केवल धूप व दीप, वह भी सुरक्षित दूरी पर।
- निर्माल्य का सम्मान: पूजन-सामग्री कूड़े में न डालें — बहते जल में विसर्जित करें या पौधे की जड़ में रखें। प्लास्टिक व थर्मोकोल की सजावट से बचें।
- गारंटी का दावा नहीं: कोई पूजा, यंत्र या ताबीज़ व्यापार में लाभ की गारंटी नहीं देता। जो ऐसा दावा करे, उससे दूरी रखें।
- स्वास्थ्य: रोगी, गर्भवती व वृद्ध जन उपवास न करें — शास्त्र में आपद्धर्म का स्पष्ट प्रावधान है। दवा कभी बंद न करें।
प्रेरक प्रसंग — शास्त्र-कथा
शिल्प-परंपरा में एक बात दोहरायी जाती है — जो हाथ औज़ार को नहीं पहचानता, वह कारीगर नहीं। कहा जाता है कि एक शिष्य ने अपने गुरु से पूछा कि सिद्धि किस मंत्र से मिलती है। गुरु ने उसे एक टूटी छेनी दी और कहा — “पहले इसे पहचान।” महीनों बाद जब शिष्य ने छेनी की धार, उसका वज़न और उसकी थकान तक जान ली, तब गुरु बोले — “अब तेरा मंत्र सिद्ध है। विश्वकर्मा उसी हाथ में बसते हैं जो अपने औज़ार का सम्मान करता है।” विश्वकर्मा पूजा का पूरा भाव इसी एक वाक्य में है — औज़ार का सम्मान, कार्य का सम्मान, और कार्य करने वाले का सम्मान।

Who is Lord Vishwakarma — the Vedic basis
Vishwakarma is not merely a folk deity. The tenth mandala of the Rigveda contains two entire hymns — 10.81 and 10.82 — addressed to him, known as the Vishwakarma Sukta. There he is described as the maker of all the worlds, vishvatashchakshuh (eyed on every side) and vishvatomukha (faced on every side), the father and sustainer. The Vedic Vishwakarma is a philosophical idea: the intelligence that shapes creation.
In Puranic tradition that same principle takes form as the divine architect. The Puranas and Mahabharata associate him with Indra's Amaravati, the city of Dwarka, the Pushpaka Vimana and the celestial weapons. This is why engineers, craftsmen, carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, mechanics, architects, drivers and factory workers all regard him as their presiding deity.
Why Kanya Sankranti matters
Sankranti means the Sun's passage from one zodiac sign into the next. On Kanya Sankranti the Sun enters Virgo — a sign of Mercury, whose nature is analysis, skill, precision and craft. Tradition connects the worship of the deity of craftsmanship to precisely this alignment.
- Snan and daan: bathing, offering water (arghya) to the Sun and giving grain or cloth in charity carry particular merit during punya kaal.
- Ritu-sandhi: a Sankranti is a seasonal joint — keep food light and sattvic around these days, and avoid unnecessary travel or overexertion.
- Solar month: Simha maas ends and Kanya (solar Ashwin) maas begins on this very day.
Complete puja vidhi for tools and machinery
The day before
- Thoroughly clean the workplace, shop, workshop or factory. Clear out scrap, broken parts and clutter.
- Clean the tools, machines and vehicles themselves — remove dust, grease and rust. This is the real worship of this festival.
- Gather the materials: kalash, mango leaves, coconut, akshat (unbroken rice), roli–haldi–kumkum, kalava thread, flowers, incense and lamp, fruit, sweets, panchamrit.
On the day
- Bath and sankalp: bathe early and wear clean clothes. Holding water, akshat and a flower, take the sankalp — naming the place, the date and the purpose (skill, safety and honest livelihood).
- Kalash sthapana: facing east or north, spread a red cloth on a low table, place a water-filled kalash with mango leaves and a coconut on top, and set an image or murti of Lord Vishwakarma beside it.
- Invoke Ganapati: every puja begins with Shri Ganesha — Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
- Avahan and upachar: invoke Lord Vishwakarma and offer what you can — seat, water, sandal paste, akshat, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.
- Worship of the tools: apply a haldi–kumkum tilak to tools, machines and vehicles, tie kalava, and offer flowers. Bow to the instrument that feeds your household.
- Mantra japa: at least one mala (108) of the root mantra.
- Aarti and prasad: perform the aarti, offer naivedya, then distribute prasad to every colleague and worker. The shared meal is the soul of this festival.
Authentic mantras
तन्नो विश्वकर्मा प्रचोदयात्॥Om Vishwakarmane Vidmahe, Mahatattvaya Dhimahi, Tanno Vishwakarma Prachodayat — the widely used Vishwakarma Gayatri, for skill, intelligence and creative capacity.
Sadhaks who wish to recite the Veda may take up the Vishwakarma Sukta (Rigveda 10.81–10.82) under the guidance of a qualified acharya. Vedic recitation depends on accent (udatta–anudatta); do not attempt it by guesswork without instruction. The nama-mantra and the Gayatri-style mantra above are open and safe for everyone.
Muhurat and rules
- Timing: perform the main puja between sunrise and midday, within the Sankranti punya kaal. Avoid Rahukaal and Yamaganda — check your local panchang.
- Direction: face east or north.
- Diet: stay unfed or on fruit until the puja; fasting is not compulsory. A sattvic shared meal afterwards.
- Resting the machines: traditionally machines are switched off for the day as an act of gratitude. Where that is impossible — hospitals, power, transport — perform the puja in the morning and continue work; the shastras explicitly allow for aapaddharma.
- Include everyone: workers, helpers and drivers must be part of it. Worshipping the deity of craft while excluding the hands that do the craft is incomplete.
Cautions that are usually left unsaid
- Puja is not a substitute for safety: a ritual does not repair faulty wiring, a worn belt or a missing guard. The truest sankalp of this day is an actual inspection and repair of the machines. That is the worship Vishwakarma would accept first.
- Never apply oil or sindoor to moving parts: smearing oil, sindoor or tying thread on motors, belts, gears or electrical points can cause an accident. A symbolic tilak on a stationary part of the machine is entirely sufficient.
- Fire safety: no open lamp or havan near sawmills, paint, solvents or chemicals. In such places use only incense and a lamp, at a safe distance.
- Respect the nirmalya: do not throw used puja material in the bin — immerse it in flowing water or place it at the root of a plant. Avoid plastic and thermocol decorations.
- No guarantees: no puja, yantra or amulet guarantees profit in business. Keep your distance from anyone who claims otherwise.
- Health first: the ill, pregnant and elderly should not fast — aapaddharma is explicitly provided for. Never stop prescribed medication.
A teaching story
The craft traditions repeat a line: the hand that does not know its tool is not a craftsman's hand. A student once asked his teacher which mantra grants siddhi. The teacher handed him a broken chisel and said, “First, know this.” Months later, when the student had learnt the chisel's edge, its weight, even the way it tired in his hand, the teacher said: “Now your mantra is accomplished. Vishwakarma dwells in the hand that respects its tool.” The whole spirit of Vishwakarma Puja sits in that one sentence — respect for the tool, respect for the work, and respect for the one who does the work.
