मध्याह्न काल ही क्यों?
शास्त्रीय मान्यता है कि भगवान गणेश का प्राकट्य भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी के मध्याह्न काल में हुआ। निर्णयसिन्धु व धर्मसिन्धु जैसे निर्णय-ग्रंथों में इसी आधार पर गणेश चतुर्थी का व्रत व पूजन मध्याह्न-व्यापिनी चतुर्थी पर निर्धारित किया गया है। दिन को पाँच बराबर भागों में बाँटने पर तीसरा भाग मध्याह्न कहलाता है — यही गणपति का जन्म-काल है। इसीलिए अन्य व्रतों की तरह केवल “उदयातिथि” का नियम यहाँ नहीं लगता; निर्णय मध्याह्न से होता है। 2026 में 14 सितम्बर के मध्याह्न में चतुर्थी विद्यमान है, अतः पर्व निर्विवाद रूप से उसी दिन है।
गणपति स्थापना व पूजा विधि — चरण दर चरण
- तैयारी: प्रातः स्नान कर स्वच्छ (श्वेत, पीत या लाल) वस्त्र धारण करें। घर के ईशान या उत्तर-पूर्व कोने में चौकी रखकर लाल अथवा पीला वस्त्र बिछाएँ।
- आसन: वस्त्र पर अक्षत (साबुत चावल) की छोटी ढेरी बनाकर उस पर मूर्ति स्थापित करें। मूर्ति का मुख पश्चिम या उत्तर की ओर हो, ताकि पूजक पूर्व/दक्षिण की ओर मुख कर बैठे।
- संकल्प: हाथ में जल, अक्षत व पुष्प लेकर अपना नाम, गोत्र, स्थान, तिथि व संकल्प के दिनों की संख्या (डेढ़, तीन, पाँच, सात या दस) बोलकर जल छोड़ दें। जितने दिन का संकल्प लें, उतना निभाना अनिवार्य है — इसलिए अपनी सामर्थ्य के अनुसार ही लें।
- प्राण-प्रतिष्ठा व आवाहन: मूर्ति पर गंगाजल छिड़ककर, हाथ जोड़कर “ॐ गं गणपतये नमः” का जप करते हुए गणपति का आवाहन करें।
- षोडशोपचार पूजन: क्रम है — आसन, पाद्य, अर्घ्य, आचमन, स्नान, वस्त्र, यज्ञोपवीत, गंध (सिंदूर), पुष्प, दूर्वा, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य (मोदक/लड्डू), ताम्बूल, दक्षिणा व आरती।
- दूर्वा अर्पण: गणपति को 21 दूर्वा-दल अर्पित करें (प्रत्येक दल में 3 या 5 कोमल पत्तियाँ)। प्रत्येक अर्पण के साथ “ॐ गं गणपतये नमः” कहें। दूर्वा गणेश-पूजन का प्राण है — पुष्प न भी हों तो चलेगा, दूर्वा अवश्य हो।
- सिंदूर व नैवेद्य: दाहिने हाथ की अनामिका से सिंदूर लगाएँ। 21 मोदक या लड्डू का भोग लगाएँ; मोदक न बना सकें तो गुड़-नारियल या शुद्ध बूँदी भी स्वीकार्य है।

Ganesha Gayatri — स्थापना के पश्चात् 108 बार जप श्रेष्ठ माना गया है।
जो साधक अधिक कर सकें वे श्री गणपति अथर्वशीर्ष अथवा संकटनाशन गणेश स्तोत्र का पाठ दस दिनों तक नित्य करें। उच्चारण शुद्ध न आता हो तो हिन्दी लिप्यंतरण के साथ धीरे-धीरे पढ़ें — भाव शुद्ध हो तो गति की त्रुटि क्षम्य है।
चंद्र-दर्शन का निषेध — कथा और उपाय
गणेश चतुर्थी की सबसे प्रसिद्ध किन्तु सबसे कम समझी गई परंपरा है चंद्र-दर्शन निषेध। 2026 में 14 सितम्बर को प्रातः ~9:01 से रात्रि ~8:09 बजे तक चंद्रमा नहीं देखना चाहिए।
पौराणिक प्रसंग यह है कि चतुर्थी के चंद्रमा ने गणेश जी के स्वरूप का उपहास किया, जिस पर गणेश जी ने शाप दिया कि जो इस दिन चंद्र-दर्शन करेगा उस पर मिथ्या दोष (झूठा आरोप) लगेगा। इसी शाप का प्रत्यक्ष उदाहरण श्रीकृष्ण व स्यमन्तक मणि का प्रसंग है — भाद्रपद चतुर्थी को चंद्र-दर्शन हो जाने के कारण श्रीकृष्ण पर मणि-चोरी का मिथ्या आरोप लगा। बाद में जाम्बवान से मणि प्राप्त कर उन्होंने अपना पक्ष निर्दोष सिद्ध किया। यह कथा विष्णु पुराण व श्रीमद्भागवत (दशम स्कन्ध) में वर्णित है।
सुकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः॥
भूलवश चंद्र-दर्शन हो जाने पर इस स्यमन्तक श्लोक का 21 या 108 बार पाठ करें — यही शास्त्र-सम्मत परिहार है।
ईमानदार बात: यह भय का विषय नहीं है। शास्त्र ने दोष बताया है तो उसका सरल परिहार भी बताया है। यदि चंद्रमा दिख जाए तो घबराएँ नहीं — उपरोक्त श्लोक का पाठ करें या श्रीमद्भागवत के स्यमन्तक-प्रसंग का श्रवण करें।

- गणेश जी को तुलसी अर्पित न करें। परंपरा व पुराण-प्रसंग के अनुसार तुलसी गणपति-पूजन में वर्जित है। दूर्वा, शमी-पत्र, लाल पुष्प व मंदार श्रेष्ठ हैं।
- खंडित या टूटी मूर्ति स्थापित न करें। स्थापना के बाद यदि मूर्ति खंडित हो जाए तो उसे यथाशीघ्र विधिपूर्वक विसर्जित कर दें।
- प्लास्टर-ऑफ-पेरिस व रासायनिक रंगों की मूर्ति से बचें। ये जल में नहीं घुलतीं और नदी-तालाब को विषैला करती हैं। शुद्ध मिट्टी की मूर्ति लें और यदि नदी उपलब्ध न हो तो घर पर बाल्टी, टब या नगरपालिका के कृत्रिम विसर्जन-कुंड में विसर्जन करें — यह शास्त्र-सम्मत भी है और धर्म-सम्मत भी।
- दस दिन का संकल्प तभी लें जब निभा सकें। डेढ़ दिन का संकल्प भी उतना ही पूर्ण व शास्त्र-सम्मत है। अधूरी सेवा से अल्प सेवा श्रेष्ठ है।
- “गारंटीड सिद्धि”, “तुरंत धन” या शुल्क लेकर वशीकरण बेचने वालों से दूर रहें। गणपति विघ्नहर्ता हैं — उनके नाम पर भय बेचना अधर्म है।
- व्रत करने में असमर्थ रोगी, गर्भवती, मधुमेह-पीड़ित व वृद्ध जन केवल पूजन, दर्शन व नाम-जप करें — उपवास अनिवार्य नहीं है।

Why Madhyahna, and not sunrise?
Tradition holds that Lord Ganesha manifested during the Madhyahna period of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. On that basis, nirnaya texts such as Nirnaya-sindhu and Dharma-sindhu fix the Ganesh Chaturthi vrat and puja on the Madhyahna-vyapini Chaturthi — the day on which Chaturthi is present at midday. If the daylight period is divided into five equal parts, the third part is Madhyahna; that is Ganapati's birth hour. This is why the usual "udaya-tithi" rule that governs most other vrats does not decide this festival — the decision is made at Madhyahna. In 2026, Chaturthi is present at midday on 14 September, so the festival falls unambiguously on that day.
Ganpati Sthapana & Puja Vidhi — step by step
- Preparation: Bathe in the morning and wear clean white, yellow or red clothes. Place a low wooden chowki in the north-east (Ishan) corner of the home and spread a red or yellow cloth over it.
- Seat: Make a small heap of akshat (whole unbroken rice) on the cloth and install the murti on it. The murti should face west or north, so that the worshipper sits facing east or south.
- Sankalp: Holding water, akshat and a flower, state your name, gotra, place, date and the number of days of your sankalp (1½, 3, 5, 7 or 10), then release the water. Whatever number of days you vow, you must complete — so choose according to what you can genuinely sustain.
- Pran-pratishtha & avahan: Sprinkle Gangajal on the murti and invoke Ganapati with folded hands while chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah".
- Shodashopachara puja: The sequence is asana, padya, arghya, achamana, snana, vastra, yajnopavita, gandha (sindoor), pushpa, durva, dhupa, deepa, naivedya (modak/laddu), tambula, dakshina and aarti.
- Durva offering: Offer 21 durva-dal (each bunch of 3 or 5 tender blades), saying "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" with each. Durva is the heart of Ganesha worship — if flowers are unavailable that is acceptable, but durva should not be.
- Sindoor & naivedya: Apply sindoor with the ring finger of the right hand. Offer 21 modak or laddu; if modak cannot be prepared, jaggery-coconut or pure boondi is equally acceptable.
- Aarti & kshama-prarthana: Perform the camphor aarti, ask forgiveness for any errors made knowingly or unknowingly, and distribute prasad.

Those able to do more may recite the Shri Ganapati Atharvashirsha or the Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotra daily for the duration of the sankalp. If your Sanskrit pronunciation is imperfect, read slowly with a transliteration — where the intent is pure, errors of pace are forgiven.
The moon-sighting prohibition — the story and the remedy
The best known and least understood custom of this day is the prohibition on seeing the moon. In 2026, on 14 September the moon should not be viewed from about 9:01 AM until about 8:09 PM.
The puranic account is that the Chaturthi moon mocked Ganesha's form, and Ganesha declared that whoever looks at the moon on this day will be burdened with mithya dosha — a false accusation. The clearest illustration is the episode of Krishna and the Syamantaka jewel: having glanced at the moon on Bhadrapada Chaturthi, Krishna was falsely accused of stealing the gem, and cleared his name only after recovering it from Jambavan. The account appears in the Vishnu Purana and the Srimad Bhagavatam (Canto 10).
Sukumaraka Ma Rodis Tava Hyesha Syamantakah
If the moon is seen by accident, recite this Syamantaka shloka 21 or 108 times — this is the traditional remedy.
An honest word: this is not a matter for fear. Where the shastra names a dosha, it also names a simple remedy. If you happen to see the moon, do not panic — recite the shloka above, or listen to the Syamantaka episode from the Srimad Bhagavatam.

For as many days as Ganapati is seated in the home, offer aarti twice daily — morning and evening — with fresh naivedya and durva. Maintain cleanliness, restrained speech and sattvic food in the household.
Visarjan vidhi: On the day of immersion perform the morning uttar-puja, offer a final naivedya of curd-rice or coconut and modak, perform aarti, ask forgiveness for any lapse in service, and then immerse the murti in water. The traditional call is "Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya."

- Do not offer tulsi to Ganesha. By tradition and puranic account, tulsi is excluded from Ganapati worship. Durva, shami leaves, red flowers and mandara are the proper offerings.
- Never install a chipped or broken murti. If the murti breaks after installation, immerse it respectfully as soon as possible.
- Avoid Plaster of Paris murtis and chemical paints. They do not dissolve and they poison rivers and ponds. Choose a pure clay murti, and if no river is available, immerse it at home in a bucket or tub, or at a municipal artificial immersion tank — this is fully valid both ritually and ethically.
- Take a ten-day sankalp only if you can complete it. A 1½-day sankalp is just as complete and just as valid. Short service done fully is better than long service abandoned.
- Stay away from anyone selling "guaranteed siddhi", "instant wealth" or paid vashikaran. Ganapati is Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles — selling fear in his name is adharma.
- Those who cannot fast — the ill, pregnant women, diabetics and the elderly — should simply do the puja, darshan and nama-japa. Fasting is not compulsory.
