हरियाली तीज इस वर्ष शनिवार, 15 अगस्त 2026 को है — सावन (श्रावण) मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया। इसे श्रावणी तीज या छोटी तीज भी कहते हैं। यह सुहागिनों का महापर्व है — उस दिन का उत्सव, जब माता पार्वती की कठोर तपस्या पूर्ण हुई और महादेव ने उन्हें अर्धांगिनी रूप में स्वीकार किया। सुहागिन स्त्रियाँ पति की दीर्घायु व अखण्ड सौभाग्य के लिए तथा कुँवारी कन्याएँ उत्तम वर की प्राप्ति के लिए यह व्रत रखती हैं। इस बार तीज स्वतंत्रता दिवस के अवकाश के दिन पड़ रही है, अतः परिवार सहित पूजा-उत्सव सहज होगा। आइए जानें तिथि, शुभ मुहूर्त, प्रामाणिक पूजा विधि, व्रत नियम, गौरी मंत्र व तीज की कथा।
हरियाली तीज का महत्व
श्रावण शुक्ल तृतीया शिव-शक्ति के मिलन की तिथि मानी गई है। परम्परा कहती है कि माता पार्वती ने महादेव को पति रूप में पाने के लिए जन्म-जन्मान्तर तक घोर तप किया, और इसी तिथि को शिव ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें स्वीकार करने का वचन दिया। इसीलिए इस दिन तीज माता — अर्थात् गौरी-पार्वती — की पूजा का विधान है; शक्ति-उपासकों के लिए यह देवी के सौम्य गौरी-स्वरूप की आराधना का श्रेष्ठ अवसर है। "हरियाली" नाम इसलिए कि सावन की वर्षा से धरती हरी चूनर ओढ़ लेती है — हरे वस्त्र, हरी चूड़ियाँ, मेहंदी और बाग़ों में झूले इसी हरियाली का उत्सव हैं। राजस्थान, उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, बिहार-झारखण्ड व हरियाणा-पंजाब में यह पर्व विशेष धूम से मनाया जाता है; तीज से एक दिन पूर्व मायके से सिंजारा (वस्त्र, मेहंदी, श्रृंगार व मिठाई) भेजने की परम्परा है।

हरियाली तीज की पूजा विधि
- एक दिन पूर्व (सिंजारा): 14 अगस्त को मेहंदी लगाएँ; मायके से आया श्रृंगार-सिंजारा ग्रहण करें। कई परिवारों में इसी संध्या से व्रत का संकल्प लिया जाता है।
- प्रातः स्नान व संकल्प: 15 अगस्त को ब्रह्म-मुहूर्त या प्रातः स्नान कर हरे/शुभ रंग के वस्त्र पहनें, सोलह श्रृंगार करें और गौरी-शंकर के समक्ष व्रत का संकल्प लें।
- प्रतिमा स्थापना: चौकी पर स्वच्छ वस्त्र बिछाकर शुद्ध (काली) मिट्टी से शिव, पार्वती व गणेश जी की प्रतिमाएँ बनाएँ या घर की धातु-प्रतिमा/चित्र स्थापित करें।
- गणेश-पूजन: सर्वप्रथम गणपति का स्मरण-पूजन कर निर्विघ्न पूजा की प्रार्थना करें।
- तीज माता का पूजन व श्रृंगार-अर्पण: तीज माता (गौरी) को जल, अक्षत, रोली, चंदन, पुष्प व दूर्वा अर्पित करें; फिर सुहाग की सामग्री — हरी चूड़ियाँ, बिंदी, सिंदूर, मेहंदी, महावर, बिछिया, चुनरी — श्रद्धापूर्वक चढ़ाएँ। शिवजी को बेलपत्र, भस्म व वस्त्र अर्पित करें।
- मंत्र-जप: नीचे दिए गौरी-मंत्रों का जप करें; "ॐ नमः शिवाय" व "ॐ उमामहेश्वराभ्यां नमः" की एक-एक माला उत्तम है।
- तीज कथा व आरती: हरियाली तीज की कथा पढ़ें/सुनें, फिर माता गौरी व शिवजी की आरती करें; नैवेद्य में घेवर, खीर या घर की बनी मिठाई अर्पित करें।
- झूला व तीज-गीत: संध्या को झूला झूलने, तीज-गीत गाने व सामूहिक उत्सव की परम्परा निभाएँ — यह भी पूजा का ही विस्तार है।
- पारण: व्रत का पारण अपनी कुल-परम्परा अनुसार सायं पूजा के बाद या अगले प्रातः करें।

व्रत नियम व सावधानियाँ
- परम्परा में यह व्रत निर्जला कहा गया है, किंतु शास्त्र भाव-प्रधान हैं — गर्भवती, रोगी, वृद्ध या औषधि ले रही स्त्रियाँ फलाहार/जलाहार के साथ व्रत रखें; कष्ट देकर किया गया हठ व्रत का फल नहीं बढ़ाता।
- व्रत के दिन क्रोध, कलह, असत्य व किसी की निंदा से दूर रहें — तीज का मूल भाव प्रेम, क्षमा और समर्पण है।
- हरियाली का सम्मान करें — इस दिन वृक्ष-पौधे काटना अनुचित माना गया है; हो सके तो एक पौधा रोपें।
- सुहाग-सामग्री पूजा के बाद सास या किसी सुहागिन को आदरपूर्वक भेंट करें — यही इस पूजा का दान-अंग है।
- कुँवारी कन्याएँ भी यह व्रत रख सकती हैं — गौरी-पूजन व ऊपर दी "हे गौरि शंकरार्धांगि…" प्रार्थना पर्याप्त है; किसी विशेष तांत्रिक प्रयोग की आवश्यकता नहीं। कोई भी उग्र साधना केवल योग्य गुरु के मार्गदर्शन में करें।
- ऊपर दिए सभी मंत्र सर्व-सुलभ व सुरक्षित हैं; व्रत केवल श्रद्धा से करें, किसी अंधविश्वास या भय से नहीं।
शास्त्र-कथा — पार्वती की तपस्या
तीज की कथा शिव-पार्वती संवाद रूप में कही जाती है — स्वयं महादेव पार्वती को उनका पूर्व-तप स्मरण कराते हैं। हिमालय-पुत्री पार्वती ने मन ही मन शिव को वर लिया था, किंतु नारद जी के परामर्श से पिता हिमालय उनका विवाह श्रीविष्णु से करना चाहते थे। तब सखी के परामर्श पर पार्वती घने वन में गुप्त कन्दरा में जा बैठीं और रेत के शिवलिंग बनाकर कठोर तप करने लगीं — निराहार, वर्षा-धूप सहतीं। श्रावण शुक्ल तृतीया के दिन उनकी निष्ठा से प्रसन्न होकर महादेव ने प्रकट होकर उन्हें पत्नी रूप में स्वीकारने का वचन दिया। अन्ततः हिमालय ने भी पुत्री का संकल्प देखकर विधिपूर्वक शिव-पार्वती का विवाह कराया। यह कथा सिखाती है कि श्रद्धा और धैर्य से किया संकल्प स्वयं महादेव को भी प्रसन्न कर देता है — इसीलिए मान्यता है कि इस दिन गौरी-पूजन करने वाली स्त्री का सौभाग्य अखण्ड रहता है।

It is also called Shravani Teej or Chhoti Teej. This is the great festival of married women — celebrating the day Mata Parvati's severe tapasya bore fruit and Mahadeva accepted her as his consort. Married women keep this vrat for their husband's long life and unbroken saubhagya, and unmarried girls for the blessing of a worthy groom. This year Teej falls on the Independence Day holiday, making family worship and celebration easier. Why Hariyali Teej Matters
Shravan Shukla Tritiya is held to be the tithi of the union of Shiva and Shakti. Tradition says Mata Parvati performed intense tapas across lifetimes to win Mahadeva as her husband, and on this very tithi Shiva, pleased, gave his word to accept her. Hence the worship of Teej Mata — Gauri-Parvati — is ordained on this day; for Shakti-upasakas it is the finest occasion to worship the Devi in her gentle Gauri form. The name "Hariyali" (greenery) comes from the Sawan rains that drape the earth in green — green clothes, green bangles, mehndi and garden swings all celebrate this. The festival is kept with special fervour in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar-Jharkhand and Haryana-Punjab; a day before Teej, the Sinjara (clothes, mehndi, shringar and sweets) is traditionally sent from the woman's parental home.

Hariyali Teej — Puja Vidhi
- The day before (Sinjara): apply mehndi on 14 August; receive the shringar-sinjara from the parental home. In many families the sankalpa of the vrat is taken from this evening.
- Morning bath & sankalpa: on 15 August bathe in the Brahma-muhurat or early morning, wear green/auspicious clothes, do the solah shringar and take the vow of the vrat before Gauri-Shankar.
- Installing the images: spread a clean cloth on a chowki and shape idols of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha from pure clay, or install the household murtis/picture.
- Ganesh-pujan: first invoke and worship Ganapati, praying for an unobstructed puja.
- Worship of Teej Mata & shringar offering: offer water, akshata, roli, sandal, flowers and durva to Teej Mata (Gauri); then reverently offer the suhag items — green bangles, bindi, sindoor, mehndi, mahavar, bichhiya, chunari. Offer belpatra, bhasma and cloth to Shiva.
- Mantra-japa: chant the Gauri mantras given below; one mala each of "Om Namah Shivaya" and "Om Umamaheshvarabhyam Namah" is excellent.
- Teej katha & aarti: read or hear the Hariyali Teej katha, then perform the aarti of Mata Gauri and Shiva; offer ghewar, kheer or homemade sweets as naivedya.
- Swing & Teej songs: in the evening keep the tradition of swinging on the jhula and singing Teej songs together — this too is an extension of the worship.
- Parana: break the fast after the evening puja or the next morning, as your family tradition prescribes.

Vrat Niyams & Cautions
- Tradition describes this as a nirjala (waterless) fast, but the shastras place bhava first — pregnant women, the unwell, the elderly or those on medication should keep the vrat with fruit/water; self-torment does not increase the fruit of a vrat.
- On the vrat day stay away from anger, quarrel, untruth and speaking ill of anyone — the essence of Teej is love, forgiveness and devotion.
- Honour the greenery — cutting trees and plants is considered improper this day; plant a sapling if you can.
- After the puja, gift the suhag items respectfully to your mother-in-law or another married woman — this is the daan-limb of the worship.
- Unmarried girls may certainly keep this vrat — Gauri-pujan and the "He Gauri Shankarardhaangi…" prayer above are sufficient; no special tantric prayoga is needed. Undertake any fierce sadhana only under a qualified guru.
- All the mantras above are universal and safe; keep the vrat out of shraddha alone, never out of superstition or fear.
A Scripture Story — Parvati's Tapasya
The Teej katha is told as a dialogue of Shiva and Parvati — Mahadeva himself reminds Parvati of her former tapas. The daughter of Himalaya had chosen Shiva in her heart, but on Narada's counsel her father wished to wed her to Shri Vishnu. On her companion's advice, Parvati withdrew to a hidden cave in a dense forest and, shaping a Shivalinga of sand, performed severe tapas — without food, bearing rain and sun. On Shravan Shukla Tritiya, pleased by her steadfastness, Mahadeva appeared and gave his word to accept her as his wife. Seeing his daughter's resolve, Himalaya at last had the marriage of Shiva and Parvati performed with full rites. The story teaches that a vow kept with shraddha and patience pleases even Mahadeva himself — hence the belief that a woman who worships Gauri on this day keeps her saubhagya unbroken.
