The Vrat Katha — From Sati to Parvati

According to the Puranic katha, Sati, daughter of Prajapati Daksha, married Lord Shiva against her father's wish. When Daksha held his great yajna and insulted Shiva by leaving him uninvited, Sati went to the yajna and, wounded by the insult to her husband, gave up her body in the fire of yoga. The katha says that for leaving her body without Shiva's consent, Sati had to wander the forests for a long age in the form of a kokila (cuckoo). In that form she performed severe vrata-tapas on Ashadha Purnima — and by the merit of that austerity she was born again as Parvati, daughter of Himalaya, and regained Shiva. This vrat is thus the story of the journey from separation to union — from the trial by fire of faith to its victory.

In the Shakta tradition, the same Daksha-yajna episode also carries the katha of the manifestation of the Das Mahavidyas — when the wrathful Sati revealed to Shiva her ten great powers. The very Sati whom this vrat remembers is Adishakti herself, from whom Kali, Tara and the other Mahavidyas appeared. For Shakti sadhakas, the Purnima of Kokila Vrat is a most excellent tithi for Devi worship, japa and meditation.

Significance of Kokila Vrat

• Unbroken saubhagya: married women keep this vrat for the long life, health and marital happiness of their husbands.
• A worthy spouse: for unmarried girls the vrat is held to bear the fruit Parvati herself received — a partner after one's own heart.
• Removal of marriage obstacles: for those whose marriage faces repeated delay or obstruction, this vrat kept with devotion is a special remedy.
• Shiva-Shakti grace: joint worship of Shiva and Parvati just before Sawan is the finest beginning to the whole month's sadhana.

Kokila Vrat Puja Vidhi (Simple & Shastra-Based)

1. Morning bath & sankalpa: bathe in the Brahma muhurta or early morning; tradition prescribes bathing with water mixed with amla or fragrant herbs on this day. Wear clean clothes and take the vow of the vrat.
2. The day's fast: keep a fruit or full fast through the day as your capacity allows, with sattvic restraint. Offering the first roti to a cow is held auspicious.
3. Pradosh kaal puja: in the evening pradosh period, install an image of Shiva-Parvati at your puja place. By tradition a clay image of a kokila is placed on a banana leaf or wooden seat and worshipped — the symbol of Sati's form of tapas.
4. Offerings: offer turmeric, sandal, akshata, flowers, fruit, incense and a ghee lamp; offering shringar (suhag) items to the Mother is excellent.
5. Japa & katha: chant one mala (108) of each mantra below and read or listen to the Kokila Vrat katha.
6. Arti & charity: perform the arti of Shiva-Gauri and share prasad; give grain, clothes or suhag items in charity as you can. The snan-daan Purnima next day (29 July) carries special merit for charity.

Muhurat & Rules

• Do the main puja in the pradosh kaal (about two and a quarter hours after sunset) — in 2026, approx. 7:15 to 9:20 PM.
• Keep sattvic food, truthful speech and restraint through the day; avoid tamasic food, anger and harsh words.
• Turmeric and yellow-red flowers are held auspicious in this puja.
• Break the fast the next day after bath and charity.

• Both mantras above are universal and safe — anyone may chant them with devotion. Undertake any special tantric rite or fierce sadhana only under the guidance of a qualified guru.
