वरलक्ष्मी व्रत श्रावण मास का वह शुक्रवार है जिस दिन माता महालक्ष्मी की उपासना उनके वरदायिनी स्वरूप में की जाती है — "वर" अर्थात् वरदान, "लक्ष्मी" अर्थात् श्री, समृद्धि व सौभाग्य। इस वर्ष एक प्रश्न सबसे अधिक पूछा जा रहा है — व्रत 21 अगस्त को है या 28 अगस्त को? उत्तर सरल है, और भ्रम का कारण भी सुस्पष्ट है। इस लेख में हम दोनों तिथियों का शास्त्रीय आधार, कलश स्थापना की प्रामाणिक विधि, पूजा का सर्वोत्तम समय, चारुमती की व्रत कथा, अष्टलक्ष्मी का स्वरूप, प्रामाणिक मंत्र तथा वे सावधानियाँ बताएँगे जिनकी चर्चा प्रायः नहीं होती।
वरलक्ष्मी व्रत 2026 — 21 अगस्त या 28 अगस्त?
वरलक्ष्मी व्रत का शास्त्रीय नियम एक ही है — श्रावण पूर्णिमा से पूर्व पड़ने वाला शुक्रवार। भ्रम इसलिए होता है क्योंकि उत्तर और दक्षिण भारत श्रावण मास की गणना भिन्न रीति से करते हैं (अमान्त बनाम पूर्णिमान्त परंपरा), जिससे 2026 में दो प्रचलित तिथियाँ बन रही हैं:

पूजा का शुभ मुहूर्त
परंपरा में वरलक्ष्मी पूजा प्रातःकाल, दोपहर से पूर्व, विशेषतः सिंह लग्न में करना सर्वोत्तम माना गया है। लग्न के आरंभ-अंत के मिनट प्रत्येक नगर के अक्षांश-देशांतर पर निर्भर करते हैं, इसलिए कोई एक समय पूरे भारत के लिए मान्य नहीं होता।
21 अगस्त 2026 के लिए दक्षिण भारत (बेंगलूरु समय) के अनुसार प्रचलित चार लग्न-खंड इस प्रकार बताए गए हैं — सिंह लग्न प्रातः लगभग 6:53–8:56, वृश्चिक लग्न अपराह्न लगभग 1:35–3:54, कुंभ लग्न सायं लगभग 7:39–9:05 (प्रदोष वेला) तथा वृषभ लग्न मध्यरात्रि पश्चात् लगभग 12:03–1:58। ये समय केवल बेंगलूरु के लिए हैं — अपने नगर का पंचांग अवश्य देखें।
28 अगस्त का चंद्र ग्रहण — क्या पूजा पर असर पड़ेगा?
28 अगस्त 2026 को खंडग्रास चंद्र ग्रहण है, और उसी दिन श्रावण पूर्णिमा एवं रक्षाबंधन भी। किंतु यह ग्रहण भारत में दृश्य नहीं होगा — और शास्त्र का नियम स्पष्ट है: जहाँ ग्रहण दिखाई न दे, वहाँ सूतक मान्य नहीं होता। अतः भारत में 28 अगस्त की वरलक्ष्मी पूजा, रक्षाबंधन और पूर्णिमा-पूजन सामान्य रूप से किए जा सकते हैं। विदेश में रहने वाले साधक अपने नगर की ग्रहण-दृश्यता देखकर स्थानीय परंपरा का पालन करें। विस्तार से पढ़ें — चंद्र ग्रहण 28 अगस्त 2026 व रक्षाबंधन सूतक।
कलश पूजा विधि — चरण-दर-चरण
वरलक्ष्मी व्रत की आत्मा कलश है। इस व्रत में मूर्ति अनिवार्य नहीं — कलश को ही देवी का जीवंत स्वरूप मानकर पूजा जाता है।
- पूर्व-तैयारी (गुरुवार सायं): घर व पूजा-स्थान की सफाई करें। द्वार पर आम्र-पल्लव का तोरण तथा भूमि पर रंगोली (कोलम) बनाएँ। पूजा-सामग्री एक स्थान पर एकत्र कर लें।
- स्नान व संकल्प: शुक्रवार प्रातः सूर्योदय से पूर्व उठकर स्नान करें, स्वच्छ (यथासंभव लाल या पीत) वस्त्र धारण करें। हाथ में जल-अक्षत लेकर संकल्प लें — कुटुम्ब के आरोग्य, सौभाग्य व समृद्धि हेतु वरलक्ष्मी व्रत करने का।
- चौकी व अक्षत-आसन: ईशान (उत्तर-पूर्व) दिशा में लकड़ी की चौकी पर लाल वस्त्र बिछाएँ। उस पर चावल की छोटी ढेरी रखें — यही कलश का आसन है।
- कलश स्थापना: ताम्र, पीतल या चाँदी के पात्र में शुद्ध जल अथवा चावल भरें। उसमें हल्दी की गाँठ, एक सिक्का, अक्षत व सुपारी डालें। पात्र के मुख पर पाँच या सात आम्र-पल्लव रखकर ऊपर नारियल (जटा ऊपर की ओर) स्थापित करें।
- देवी-स्वरूप का अलंकरण: कलश पर नवीन वस्त्र लपेटें, हल्दी-कुंकुम से लेप करें, पुष्प-माला व आभूषण अर्पित करें। जहाँ परंपरा हो वहाँ नारियल पर लक्ष्मी-मुख (धातु या मिट्टी का मुखौटा) स्थापित करें।
- आवाहन व षोडशोपचार: दीप प्रज्वलित कर प्रथम गणेश-पूजन करें, तत्पश्चात् माता वरलक्ष्मी का आवाहन करें। जल, गंध, अक्षत, पुष्प, धूप, दीप व नैवेद्य — यथाशक्ति उपचार अर्पित करें।
- तोरम बंधन: हल्दी में रँगे नौ ग्रंथियों वाले पीत सूत्र (तोरम) को कलश के समक्ष रखकर पूजें, फिर दाहिने हाथ की कलाई पर बाँधें। घर की स्त्रियाँ परस्पर एक-दूसरे को भी बाँधती हैं।
- अष्टोत्तर व कथा: श्री महालक्ष्मी अष्टोत्तर-शतनामावली अथवा श्री सूक्त का पाठ करें, फिर वरलक्ष्मी व्रत कथा का श्रवण या वाचन करें।
- नैवेद्य: पायसम (खीर), लड्डू, कोझुक्कट्टै/मोदक, वड़ा, गुड़-नारियल, ऋतु-फल, ताम्बूल (पान-सुपारी) व पंचामृत अर्पित करें।
- आरती व विसर्जन: कर्पूर-आरती कर क्षमा-प्रार्थना करें। सायं या अगले दिन कलश-जल को तुलसी अथवा किसी पौधे में अर्पित कर दें; चावल का प्रयोग रसोई में करें — इसे व्यर्थ न फेंकें।
- ताम्बूल-दान: सुहागिन स्त्रियों को हल्दी, कुंकुम, चूड़ी, नारियल व ताम्बूल भेंट करें तथा प्रसाद का वितरण करें। सामर्थ्य हो तो अन्नदान करें — यही व्रत की पूर्णाहुति है।
प्रामाणिक मंत्र

अष्टलक्ष्मी — वरलक्ष्मी पूजन का मर्म
परंपरा में कहा गया है कि वरलक्ष्मी की उपासना अष्टलक्ष्मी — लक्ष्मी के आठों स्वरूपों — की उपासना के तुल्य है: आदि लक्ष्मी (मूल श्री), धन लक्ष्मी (धन-सम्पदा), धान्य लक्ष्मी (अन्न), गज लक्ष्मी (राज-वैभव), सन्तान लक्ष्मी (सन्तति), वीर/धैर्य लक्ष्मी (साहस), विजय लक्ष्मी (सफलता) और विद्या लक्ष्मी (ज्ञान)। इस सूची को ध्यान से देखिए — इसमें धन केवल एक अंश है। शास्त्र की दृष्टि में "लक्ष्मी" का अर्थ केवल धन नहीं, अपितु वह सम्पूर्णता जिसमें अन्न, साहस, संतति, विद्या और विजय सब सम्मिलित हैं। जो इस व्रत को केवल धन-प्राप्ति का साधन मान लेता है, वह इसके सात अन्य द्वार बंद कर देता है।
व्रत कथा — चारुमती
पद्म पुराण एवं लोक-परंपरा में वर्णित कथा के अनुसार कुण्डिनपुर नगर में चारुमती नाम की एक सदाचारिणी स्त्री रहती थी। वह अपने सास-ससुर व पति की सेवा श्रद्धापूर्वक करती और नित्य देवी की आराधना करती थी। एक रात्रि माता महालक्ष्मी ने उसे स्वप्न में दर्शन देकर कहा — "श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा से पूर्व के शुक्रवार को मेरा वरलक्ष्मी व्रत करो; मैं तुम्हारी समस्त कामनाएँ पूर्ण करूँगी।"
चारुमती ने प्रातः यह स्वप्न नगर की स्त्रियों को सुनाया। सबने मिलकर श्रद्धापूर्वक कलश स्थापित कर पूजा की। कथा कहती है कि पूजा की परिक्रमा करते ही उनके चरणों में नूपुर, हाथों में कंगन और घरों में धन-धान्य की वृद्धि हुई — देवी की कृपा प्रत्यक्ष हो गई। तभी से यह व्रत परंपरा में प्रतिष्ठित हुआ।
कथा का मर्म: देवी ने चारुमती को उसकी सम्पन्नता के कारण नहीं, अपितु उसके शील, सेवा और श्रद्धा के कारण चुना। व्रत की वास्तविक सामग्री यही तीन हैं; शेष सब उपचार है।
नियम व सावधानियाँ
- तिथि को लेकर विवाद न करें। 21 और 28 — दोनों पंचांग-सम्मत हैं। परिवार में मतभेद हो तो घर के बुज़ुर्गों की परंपरा को प्रमाण मानें।
- उपवास सामर्थ्य के अनुसार। मधुमेह, गर्भावस्था, रक्तचाप, दुर्बलता या किसी रोग में निर्जल व्रत न करें — फलाहार अथवा सात्त्विक आहार लेकर भी व्रत का पूर्ण फल प्राप्त होता है। शास्त्र में व्रत का विधान सामर्थ्य के अनुसार है, शरीर को कष्ट देने का नहीं।
- कलश की सामग्री का अपमान न हो। कलश का जल पौधों में अर्पित करें, चावल रसोई में प्रयोग करें, नारियल प्रसाद रूप में बाँटें। पूजित सामग्री कूड़े में न डालें।
- दीप को अकेला जलता न छोड़ें — विशेषतः जहाँ छोटे बच्चे या पर्दे हों। सुरक्षा भी साधना का अंग है।
- व्रत के दिन तामसिक भोजन, क्रोध, असत्य, कटु वचन और किसी की निंदा से बचें। घर में कलह हो तो पूजा का भाव क्षीण हो जाता है।
- अतिशयोक्ति से बचें। कोई भी व्रत रातों-रात धन बरसाने का साधन नहीं है। शास्त्र इसे कर्म, संयम और श्रद्धा का सहायक बताता है — विकल्प नहीं। जो व्यक्ति "गारंटीड धन-प्राप्ति" या "तत्काल चमत्कार" का दावा करे, उससे सावधान रहें।
- उग्र प्रयोग न करें। उपरोक्त सभी मंत्र सर्वसुलभ व सुरक्षित हैं। किसी भी उग्र बीज-मंत्र, तांत्रिक अनुष्ठान या वशीकरण-प्रयोग को योग्य गुरु के मार्गदर्शन के बिना आरंभ न करें।

This year one question is being asked more than any other: is the vrat on 21 August or 28 August? The answer is simple, and the reason for the confusion is entirely clear. Varalakshmi Vrat 2026 — 21 or 28 August?
The scriptural rule is a single one: the Friday that falls before Shravan Purnima. The confusion arises because North and South India reckon the month of Shravan differently (the Amanta and Purnimanta conventions), which in 2026 produces two customary dates:

The Auspicious Muhurat
Tradition holds that the Varalakshmi puja is best performed in the morning, before noon, and particularly during Simha (Leo) lagna. The exact minutes at which a lagna opens and closes depend on the latitude and longitude of your city, so no single clock time can be valid for all of India.
For 21 August 2026, the four lagna windows commonly published for South India (Bengaluru time) are: Simha lagna approx. 6:53–8:56 AM, Vrischika lagna approx. 1:35–3:54 PM, Kumbha lagna approx. 7:39–9:05 PM (the Pradosh hour), and Vrishabha lagna approx. 12:03–1:58 AM after midnight. These are for Bengaluru only — do check the panchang for your own city.
The Lunar Eclipse of 28 August — Does It Affect the Puja?
A partial lunar eclipse occurs on 28 August 2026, the same day as Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. However, this eclipse will not be visible from India — and the rule of the shastra is explicit: where an eclipse is not visible, sutak does not apply. So in India the Varalakshmi puja, Raksha Bandhan and Purnima worship of 28 August may all be performed normally. Kalash Puja Vidhi — Step by Step
The soul of the Varalakshmi vrat is the kalash. No idol is required in this vrat — the kalash itself is worshipped as the living form of the Goddess.
- Preparation (Thursday evening): clean the house and the puja space. Hang a toran of mango leaves at the door and draw a rangoli (kolam) on the floor. Gather all puja items in one place.
- Bath & sankalpa: on Friday rise before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes (red or yellow where custom allows). Take water and akshata in your hand and make the vow — to keep the Varalakshmi vrat for the health, good fortune and prosperity of the family.
- The seat: in the Ishan (north-east) corner, spread a red cloth on a wooden chowki and place a small heap of rice on it. That heap is the seat of the kalash.
- Kalash sthapana: fill a copper, brass or silver vessel with clean water or rice. Add a whole turmeric root, a coin, akshata and a betel nut. Place five or seven mango leaves at the mouth and set a coconut (tuft upward) upon them.
- Adorning the Goddess: wrap the kalash in a new cloth, apply turmeric and kumkum, and offer a flower garland and ornaments. Where it is the custom, fix a Lakshmi face (a metal or clay mask) onto the coconut.
- Invocation & upachara: light the lamp, worship Ganesha first, then invoke Mata Varalakshmi. Offer water, gandha, akshata, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya as your means allow.
- Tying the toram: place the yellow thread dyed in turmeric with nine knots before the kalash, worship it, then tie it on the right wrist. The women of the household also tie it for one another.
- Ashtottara & katha: recite the Shri Mahalakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali or the Shri Suktam, then read or hear the Varalakshmi Vrat katha.
- Naivedya: offer payasam (kheer), laddoo, kozhukattai/modak, vada, jaggery and coconut, seasonal fruit, tambulam (betel leaf and nut) and panchamrit.
- Aarti & visarjan: perform the camphor aarti and close with a prayer for forgiveness. In the evening or the next day, pour the kalash water at the root of a tulsi or any plant and use the rice in the kitchen — do not discard it.
- Tambulam daan: give turmeric, kumkum, bangles, coconut and tambulam to married women, and distribute the prasad. If you are able, give food in charity — that is the true completion of the vrat.

Ashtalakshmi — The Heart of This Worship
Tradition holds that worshipping Varalakshmi is equal to worshipping the Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Lakshmi: Adi Lakshmi (the primal shri), Dhana Lakshmi (wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (grain and nourishment), Gaja Lakshmi (royal prosperity), Santana Lakshmi (progeny), Veera / Dhairya Lakshmi (courage), Vijaya Lakshmi (victory) and Vidya Lakshmi (knowledge). Look at that list carefully — money is only one of the eight. In the vision of the shastra, "Lakshmi" does not mean wealth alone but a wholeness that includes food, courage, family, learning and success. Whoever reduces this vrat to a means of obtaining money has closed its other seven doors.
The Vrat Katha — Charumati
As related in the Padma Purana and in living tradition, a virtuous woman named Charumati lived in the town of Kundinapura. She served her husband and her husband's parents with devotion and worshipped the Goddess daily. One night Mahalakshmi appeared to her in a dream and said: "Keep my Varalakshmi vrat on the Friday before the full moon of Shravan, and I shall fulfil all your wishes."
In the morning Charumati told the dream to the women of her town. Together they installed the kalash and worshipped it with faith. The katha says that as they circumambulated the kalash, anklets appeared at their feet, bangles at their wrists, and abundance filled their homes — the grace of the Goddess made visible. From that time this vrat has been established in tradition.
The heart of the story: the Goddess chose Charumati not for her wealth but for her character, her service and her faith. Those three are the real materials of this vrat; everything else is upachara.
Rules & Cautions
- Do not quarrel over the date. Both the 21st and the 28th are supported by panchang. If there is disagreement in the family, take the elders' custom as authoritative.
- Fast according to your capacity. Do not keep a waterless fast if you are diabetic, pregnant, hypertensive, weak or unwell — the full fruit of the vrat is available with phalahar or a simple sattvic meal. The shastra ordains a vrat according to one's strength, not the punishment of the body.
- Do not dishonour the kalash materials. Pour the water at the root of a plant, use the rice in the kitchen, distribute the coconut as prasad. Worshipped items should never go into the bin.
- Never leave a lamp burning unattended — especially where there are small children or curtains. Safety is part of sadhana too.
- On the day of the vrat avoid tamasic food, anger, untruth, harsh speech and slander. Where there is quarrel in the house, the spirit of the puja thins away.
- Beware of exaggeration. No vrat is a device for making money rain overnight. The shastra presents it as a support to effort, restraint and faith — not a substitute for them. Be wary of anyone promising "guaranteed wealth" or "instant miracles".
- Do not attempt fierce prayogas. Every mantra given above is universal and safe. Do not begin any fierce seed-mantra, tantric anushthan or vashikaran prayoga without the guidance of a qualified guru.
