भारत में यह ग्रहण क्यों नहीं दिखेगा?
चंद्र ग्रहण सूर्य ग्रहण से भिन्न है — यह पृथ्वी के पूरे रात्रि-पक्ष से एक साथ दिखाई देता है। शर्त केवल इतनी है कि ग्रहण के समय चंद्रमा उस स्थान के क्षितिज के ऊपर हो।
28 अगस्त को यह ग्रहण भारतीय समयानुसार प्रातः 6:53 से दोपहर 12:32 बजे तक चलता है। यह भारत में पूरा दिन का समय है — और पूर्णिमा का चंद्रमा सूर्योदय के आसपास अस्त हो चुका होता है। अर्थात् जिस समय पृथ्वी की छाया चंद्रमा पर पड़ रही होगी, उस समय भारत में चंद्रमा क्षितिज के नीचे रहेगा। इसीलिए कश्मीर से कन्याकुमारी तक, किसी भी नगर से इसका एक भी चरण दिखाई नहीं देगा।
यह ग्रहण दो सप्ताह पूर्व हुए 12 अगस्त 2026 के पूर्ण सूर्य ग्रहण के साथ एक ही ग्रहण-ऋतु (eclipse season) का भाग है। वह सूर्य ग्रहण भी भारत में अदृश्य था — अर्थात् इस पूरी ग्रहण-ऋतु में भारत में कोई सूतक नहीं लग रहा।
सूतक काल — शास्त्र वास्तव में क्या कहता है
सूतक को लेकर सबसे बड़ा भ्रम यही है कि "ग्रहण संसार में कहीं भी हो, सूतक तो सब जगह लगेगा।" यह असत्य है। धर्मशास्त्र का सुस्पष्ट नियम है — सूतक केवल उसी भूभाग में मान्य होता है जहाँ ग्रहण दृश्य हो। निर्णयसिंधु तथा धर्मसिंधु जैसे प्रमाण-ग्रंथों में यही निर्देश है, और यही परंपरा से मान्य व्यवहार भी है। जो ग्रहण दिखाई ही नहीं देता, उसका न सूतक होता है, न वेध।
सूतक की सामान्य अवधि (जहाँ ग्रहण दृश्य हो)
- चंद्र ग्रहण — स्पर्श से लगभग 9 घंटे (तीन प्रहर) पूर्व सूतक आरंभ।
- सूर्य ग्रहण — स्पर्श से लगभग 12 घंटे (चार प्रहर) पूर्व सूतक आरंभ।
- दोनों में सूतक की समाप्ति मोक्ष (ग्रहण समाप्ति) के पश्चात स्नान से होती है।
तो भारत में 28 अगस्त को क्या स्थिति रहेगी?
- मंदिर सामान्य समय पर खुले रहेंगे; कपाट बंद करने का कोई कारण नहीं।
- भोजन बनाने, खाने, जल पीने या यात्रा पर कोई ग्रहण-संबंधी निषेध नहीं।
- पूजा, हवन, जप, दान, गृह-प्रवेश आदि सभी कर्म अपने सामान्य मुहूर्त में किए जा सकते हैं।
- गर्भवती महिलाओं के लिए कोई विशेष ग्रहण-नियम लागू नहीं होगा।

- प्रातः स्नान कर स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करें; पूजा-स्थान पर दीप जलाएँ।
- थाली में राखी, रोली/कुमकुम, अक्षत (साबुत चावल), दीपक व मिष्ठान्न रखें।
- सर्वप्रथम श्री गणेश व इष्टदेव को रक्षासूत्र अर्पित करें, तत्पश्चात भाई को बाँधें।
- भाई का मुख पूर्व या उत्तर दिशा की ओर हो; सिर ढका हुआ हो।

पारंपरिक रक्षासूत्र मंत्र — "जिस रक्षासूत्र से महाबली दानवेन्द्र राजा बलि बाँधे गए, उसी से मैं तुम्हें बाँधती हूँ; हे रक्षे, तुम विचलित मत होना।"
विदेश में रहने वाले साधकों के लिए — जहाँ ग्रहण दृश्य है
अमेरिका, कनाडा, यूरोप, यूके, अफ्रीका तथा दक्षिण अमेरिका में रहने वाले भारतीयों के लिए स्थिति भिन्न है — वहाँ यह ग्रहण दिखाई देगा, अतः स्थानीय समयानुसार सूतक मान्य होगा (स्पर्श से लगभग 9 घंटे पूर्व से)। ऐसे साधक निम्न परंपरागत नियमों का पालन करें:
- सूतक आरंभ होने पर नया भोजन न पकाएँ; पहले से पके भोजन में कुश या तुलसी-दल डाल दें।
- सूतक व ग्रहण काल में मूर्ति-स्पर्श व देव-पूजन वर्जित — मानसिक जप व स्तोत्र-पाठ श्रेष्ठ है।
- बालक, वृद्ध, रोगी व गर्भवती महिलाओं को भोजन-नियम में छूट है — भूखा रहना शास्त्र का उद्देश्य नहीं। औषधि समय पर लें; चिकित्सकीय परामर्श सर्वोपरि है।
- ग्रहण-काल का जप-माहात्म्य: इस अवधि में किया गया मंत्र-जप, स्तोत्र-पाठ व ध्यान सामान्य दिनों से कई गुना फलदायी माना गया है। यही ग्रहण का वास्तविक आध्यात्मिक अवसर है।
- मोक्ष के पश्चात: स्नान करें, वस्त्र बदलें, घर में गंगाजल/तुलसी-जल का छिड़काव करें, देव-प्रतिमा को स्नान कराएँ, फिर अन्न-वस्त्र का दान करें।

Why this eclipse will not be seen in India
A lunar eclipse is different from a solar eclipse — it is visible simultaneously from the entire night side of the Earth. The only condition is that the Moon must be above the horizon at that location during the eclipse.
On 28 August the eclipse runs from roughly 6:53 AM to 12:32 PM IST. That is broad daylight in India, and the full Moon has already set around sunrise. In other words, at the moment the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, the Moon is below the horizon for India. Therefore, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, not a single phase will be visible.
This eclipse belongs to the same eclipse season as the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026, which also was not visible in India. So across this entire eclipse season, no sutak applies in India.
Sutak Kaal — what the scriptures actually say
The most widespread misconception is: "an eclipse anywhere in the world means sutak everywhere." That is not correct. The rule in dharmashastra is explicit — sutak applies only in the region where the eclipse is visible. Reference works such as Nirnaya Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu state this clearly, and it is the traditionally accepted practice. An eclipse that cannot be seen carries neither sutak nor vedha.
Standard sutak duration (where the eclipse IS visible)
- Lunar eclipse — sutak begins approx. 9 hours (three prahar) before first contact.
- Solar eclipse — sutak begins approx. 12 hours (four prahar) before first contact.
- In both cases sutak ends with a bath after moksha (the end of the eclipse).
So what is the position in India on 28 August?
- Temples will remain open at their usual hours; there is no reason to close the sanctum.
- There is no eclipse-related restriction on cooking, eating, drinking water or travelling.

The single most important point: Purnima tithi ends at approximately 9:48 AM on 28 August. So do not postpone the rakhi to the afternoon or evening — tie it in the morning. This is the biggest practical caution this year, and it is exactly where most families slip.
The good news is that bhadra creates no obstruction this year — it falls in the first half of Purnima and is over by the night of 27 August. Simple method for tying the raksha-sutra
- Bathe in the morning, wear clean clothes, and light a lamp at your place of worship.
- On a thali place the rakhi, roli/kumkum, akshat (whole rice), a lamp and sweets.
- Offer the raksha-sutra first to Shri Ganesha and your ishta-devata, and only then tie it on your brother.
- The brother should face east or north, with his head covered.
- Apply tilak and akshat, perform aarti, then tie the thread on the right wrist while reciting the mantra below.
- Offer sweets; the brother then touches the feet of the parents and sister for blessings.

For devotees living abroad — where the eclipse IS visible
For Indians living in the USA, Canada, Europe, the UK, Africa and South America the position is different — the eclipse is visible there, so sutak applies as per local time (beginning roughly 9 hours before first contact). Such devotees may observe the traditional rules below:
- Once sutak begins, do not cook fresh food; place kusha grass or a tulsi leaf in food already cooked.
- During sutak and the eclipse, do not touch idols or perform image-worship — mental japa and stotra recitation are best.
- Children, the elderly, the ill and pregnant women are exempt from the food restrictions — going hungry is not the intent of shastra. Take medication on schedule; medical advice takes precedence.
- The value of japa during an eclipse: mantra japa, stotra recitation and meditation performed in this window are held to be many times more fruitful than on ordinary days. This is the real spiritual opportunity of an eclipse.
- After moksha: bathe, change clothes, sprinkle Ganga-jal or tulsi water in the home, bathe the deity's image, and then give food and clothing in charity.

Shravan Purnima, 28 August — what to do
- Morning bath and sankalpa — add a little Ganga-jal to your bathing water, then take a resolve for the day's observances.
- Raksha Bandhan — tie the rakhi before 9:48 AM (method given above).
- Shravani Upakarma — the traditional day for changing the yajnopavita (sacred thread) and for Vedarambha.
- Last day of Sawan — in 2026 Sawan runs 30 July to 28 August, so this is the final jalabhishek. Do offer water and bel-patra on the Shivalinga.
- Purnima night sadhana — note carefully: because the tithi ends on the morning of the 28th, the night of Purnima is the night of 27–28 August, not 28–29. Perform nishith-kaal Devi japa, chandra-arghya or meditation on the night of 27 August.
- Charity — white items are best: rice, milk, curd, white cloth, silver, mishri. Give according to your means, without display.

Cautions and common misconceptions
- Myth: "Even if the eclipse is abroad, sutak applies in India." — False. Sutak is based on visibility.
- Myth: "Rakhi cannot be tied this year because of the eclipse." — False. The eclipse is invisible in India and bhadra ends on the night of the 27th.
- Myth: "It is Purnima, so rakhi can be tied all day." — False. The tithi ends at about 9:48 AM.
- On rashi predictions: do not believe claims like "total ruin for such-and-such rashi." Eclipse effects are always relative to the individual birth chart, and can be favourable as well as difficult.
- Financial caution: if anyone demands a large sum for an "eclipse-remedy mahaanushthan" — pause. When sutak itself does not apply in India, what exactly is being remedied?
- Health: pregnant women, patients and the elderly must eat and take medicines on time. Religious restraint never outranks health.
