Opening Doha: Victory to Ganpati, the abode of noble virtues, gracious lord of poets; remover of obstacles and doer of all that is auspicious — glory, glory to the darling son of Girija (Parvati).1–2: Hail Ganpati, king of the ganas, who fills every task with auspiciousness and brings it to success; the elephant-faced giver of joy, Vinayaka of the universe, ordainer of intellect.3–4: His curved trunk and pure snout are lovely; the tripund tilak on His brow enchants the mind. A garland of gems and pearls shines on His chest, a golden crown on His head, and His eyes are large and wide.5–6: In His hands He holds a book, an axe and a trident; He delights in modak sweets and fragrant flowers. His body is adorned in beautiful yellow silk, and His sacred sandals gladden the hearts of the sages.7–8: Blessed son of Shiva, brother of the six-faced Kartikeya, darling of Gauri, famed throughout the world. Riddhi and Siddhi wave the chamara (fly-whisk) upon Him, and His mount, the mouse, graces His doorway.9–13 (His birth): I now sing the auspicious tale of Your birth, most pure and blessing-giving. Once the daughter of the mountain-king (Parvati) performed severe penance for a son. When that matchless yajna was complete, You came in the form of a brahmin. Recognising the guest, Gauri joyfully served You in every way; well pleased, You granted the boon that the son for whom she had done penance would be born to her.14–17: "You shall have a son of vast intellect, born even now without a womb." So the leader of the ganas, treasury of virtue and wisdom, worshipped first among the gods, spoke — then vanished and appeared as an infant in the cradle. When the child began to cry, no joy on His face could equal Gauri's delight.18–20: All were absorbed in singing songs of joy; the gods rained flowers from the sky. Shambhu and Uma gave gifts in abundance, and gods and sages came to behold the son. Seeing the great festive rejoicing, even King Shani (Saturn) came to look.21–27 (Shani's glance): Recalling his own fault (his gaze), Shani did not wish to look upon the child. Parvati took slight offence — "it is my festival, yet Shani will not gaze on my child." Hesitant, Shani said, "What can I do if I look at the infant?" Uma did not believe him and insisted he behold the boy. The moment Shani's sidelong glance fell, the child's head flew off into the sky. Parvati fell to the ground distraught — that grief cannot be described. A great cry rose over Kailasha, for Shani's look had destroyed the son.28–30 (restored to life): At once Vishnu set forth mounted on Garuda, cut off an elephant's head with His discus and brought it. He placed it upon the child's trunk, and Shankara restored life with sacred mantras. Then Shambhu named Him Ganesh, granting the boon that He, the treasure of wisdom, be worshipped first of all.31–33 (the test of wisdom): When Shiva set a test of intelligence — to circle the earth — the six-faced Kartikeya set off and wandered, lost. But You, by clever insight, simply sat and won (by circling Your divine parents). "Blessed is Ganesh!" — Shiva rejoiced in His heart, and the gods showered many flowers from the sky.34–37 (prayer): Even the thousand-mouthed Shesha cannot sing the full measure of Your glory and wisdom. "I am dull-witted, impure and sorrowful — in what manner can I offer You my prayer? Ramsundar, servant of the Lord, sings Your praise. Now, O Lord, show mercy to the lowly, and grant me a little of Your devotion and power."Closing Dohas: Whoever recites this Shri Ganesh Chalisa with focused mind, ever-new auspiciousness dwells in their home and they win the world's honour. Composed in Samvat ten-hundred-plus (as noted), on Rishi Panchami — this Chalisa is complete, O auspicious-formed Ganesh.Benefit: Regular recitation of the Ganesh Chalisa invokes Vighnaharta Ganesh to remove obstacles before any new venture and to bestow wisdom (buddhi), prosperity (riddhi–siddhi) and auspicious beginnings.Recite in the Hinglish tab for correct pronunciation. 🙏
