‘अनंत’ का अर्थ — इस व्रत का मूल भाव
‘अनंत’ अर्थात् जिसका आदि-अंत नहीं। पुराण-परंपरा में भगवान विष्णु का यह वह रूप है जो क्षीरसागर में शेषनाग की शय्या पर योगनिद्रा में स्थित है — शेष स्वयं अनंत कहलाते हैं। इसी अनंत रूप की उपासना का दिन है भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्दशी।
यह चातुर्मास का ही अंग है। देवशयनी पर श्रीहरि शयन को गए, परिवर्तिनी पर करवट बदली, और अनंत चतुर्दशी पर साधक उसी शयनरत अनंत की आराधना कर अपने संकल्प को सूत्र में बाँधकर स्मरण-योग्य बनाता है। व्रत का मर्म बहुत सीधा है — जो अनंत है उस पर श्रद्धा, और जो मिला है उसका सम्मान।
अनंत सूत्र — चौदह गाँठ का रहस्य
इस व्रत की सबसे पहचानी वस्तु है अनंत सूत्र — कच्चे सूत या रेशम का वह डोरा जिसमें चौदह गाँठें लगाई जाती हैं और जिसे हल्दी या कुंकुम से रँगा जाता है।
- चौदह गाँठ क्यों: परंपरा में इन्हें चौदह भुवनों (सात ऊर्ध्व व सात अधो लोक) का प्रतीक माना जाता है — अर्थात् वह अनंत जो समस्त लोकों में व्याप्त है। कुछ परंपराएँ इन्हें चौदह वर्ष तक व्रत निभाने के संकल्प से भी जोड़ती हैं।
- बनाने की विधि: स्वच्छ कच्चा सूत लें, हल्दी/कुंकुम/केसर के जल से रँगें, सुखाकर चौदह गाँठ लगाएँ। घर में बनाया सूत्र सर्वोत्तम माना जाता है।
- पहले अर्पण, फिर धारण: सूत्र पहले भगवान विष्णु के श्रीचरणों में अर्पित किया जाता है और पूजन-मंत्र के बाद ही धारण किया जाता है। बिना पूजन के केवल डोरा बाँध लेना परंपरा-सम्मत नहीं।
- किस हाथ में: प्रचलित परंपरा में पुरुष दाहिनी भुजा में, स्त्रियाँ बायीं भुजा में धारण करती हैं। क्षेत्र व कुल-परंपरा में भेद हो सकता है — अपने कुलाचार का पालन करें।
व्रत विधि — चरण-दर-चरण
- प्रातः स्नान व संकल्प: ब्राह्म मुहूर्त में उठकर स्नान करें। पूर्व या उत्तर मुख होकर संकल्प लें — व्रत निर्जल, फलाहारी या एक-भुक्त, यह अपनी शक्ति व स्वास्थ्य के अनुसार तय करें।
- स्थान व स्थापना: चौकी पर पीत वस्त्र बिछाएँ। कलश स्थापित कर उस पर भगवान विष्णु/अनंत का विग्रह या चित्र रखें। परंपरा में कुश या दर्भ से बनी शेषनाग की सात फणों वाली प्रतीक-आकृति भी स्थापित की जाती है।
- अनंत सूत्र का पूजन: चौदह गाँठ वाला सूत्र थाली में रखकर भगवान के सम्मुख अर्पित करें। गंध, अक्षत, पुष्प, धूप-दीप व तुलसी दल से षोडशोपचार अथवा यथाशक्ति पंचोपचार पूजन करें।
- नैवेद्य: पंचामृत, ऋतुफल, नारियल तथा मिष्ठान्न। कई क्षेत्रों में चौदह की संख्या में पूरी, मिष्ठान्न या फल अर्पित करने की परंपरा है — आधा भगवान को, आधा प्रसाद रूप में।
- कथा-श्रवण: पूजन के बाद अनंत व्रत कथा का श्रवण या पाठ करें। कथा के बिना यह व्रत परंपरा में अपूर्ण माना जाता है।
- सूत्र धारण: धारण-मंत्र बोलते हुए सूत्र बाँधें (पुरुष दाहिनी, स्त्री बायीं भुजा)। इसके बाद ब्राह्मण/वंचित को यथाशक्ति दान दें।
- पारण: संध्या-पूजन के बाद सात्त्विक आहार से व्रत पूर्ण करें। जो पूर्ण उपवास में हैं, वे अगले दिन प्रातः पारण करें।
प्रामाणिक मंत्र
अनन्तरूपे विनियोजितात्मा ह्यनन्तरूपाय नमो नमस्ते॥अनंत सूत्र धारण मंत्र — परंपरागत रूप से सूत्र बाँधते समय बोला जाता है
भाव: “हे वासुदेव! अनंत संसार-रूपी महासागर में डूबे हुए मुझको उबारिए। मेरा चित्त आपके अनंत रूप में लगा है — उस अनंत रूप को बारंबार नमस्कार है।” यही इस व्रत की पूरी प्रार्थना है — कोई सौदा नहीं, केवल शरणागति।
व्रत कथा — जो सिखाती है कि क्या नहीं करना
परंपरा में यह कथा महाभारत-प्रसंग से जुड़ी है — वनवास के कष्ट में युधिष्ठिर के पूछने पर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने उन्हें अनंत व्रत का माहात्म्य सुनाया और यह कथा कही।
सुमन्तु मुनि की पुत्री सुशीला का विवाह कौण्डिन्य ऋषि से हुआ। मार्ग में सुशीला ने स्त्रियों को अनंत व्रत करते देखा, विधि जानी और स्वयं भी श्रद्धापूर्वक अनंत सूत्र धारण किया। इसके पश्चात् उनके घर में समृद्धि आई। किंतु कौण्डिन्य ने वह सूत्र देखकर अभिमानवश कहा कि यह वैभव उनके अपने तप व पुरुषार्थ का फल है, किसी डोरे का नहीं — और सूत्र को उतारकर अनादरपूर्वक अग्नि में डाल दिया। धीरे-धीरे सारी समृद्धि नष्ट हो गई। पश्चात्ताप में कौण्डिन्य वन-वन भटके; अंततः अनुताप, क्षमा-याचना और चौदह वर्ष तक श्रद्धापूर्वक अनंत व्रत के पालन से उनका खोया हुआ वैभव व शांति लौटी।
गणेश विसर्जन — गणेशोत्सव का समापन
इसी दिन दस दिवसीय गणेशोत्सव का समापन-विसर्जन होता है। गणेश चतुर्थी 14 सितम्बर 2026 को थी; दसवाँ दिन 25 सितम्बर, अनंत चतुर्दशी है। जो परिवार डेढ़, तीन, पाँच या सात दिन की स्थापना करते हैं, वे अपनी परंपरा अनुसार पूर्व निर्धारित दिन विसर्जन करते हैं।
विसर्जन की विधि
- प्रातः विधिवत् उत्तर पूजा करें — स्नान, वस्त्र, चंदन, दूर्वा, मोदक व नैवेद्य अर्पित करें।
- दस दिन की सेवा में हुई भूल-चूक के लिए क्षमा-प्रार्थना करें और आरती करें।
- विग्रह के साथ थोड़ा अक्षत, दूर्वा व मोदक पोटली में रखें; कुछ परिवारों में दही-भात या पाँच फल भी साथ भेजे जाते हैं।
- विग्रह को उठाकर (घसीटकर नहीं) मुख पूर्व या उत्तर की ओर रखते हुए यात्रा निकालें।
- जलाशय पर पहुँचकर तीन बार परिक्रमा कर, नमस्कार व पुनरागमन-प्रार्थना के साथ धीरे-धीरे जल में विसर्जन करें।

पर्यावरण-अनुकूल विसर्जन — यह भी धर्म है
- मिट्टी की प्रतिमा चुनें। प्लास्टर ऑफ पेरिस व रासायनिक रंग जल में घुलते नहीं और जलचरों को हानि पहुँचाते हैं — जिस जल को शास्त्र पवित्र कहता है, उसी को दूषित करना विरोधाभास है।
- घर पर बड़े पात्र या बाल्टी में विसर्जन पूर्णतः मान्य है। घुले हुए जल को गमले या तुलसी के मूल में डालें, नाली में नहीं।
- पूजन-सामग्री, पॉलीथिन, थर्मोकोल व सजावट का सामान जल में न डालें — इन्हें अलग करके नगर-निगम द्वारा निर्धारित कुंड या संग्रह-स्थल पर दें।
- बच्चों व वृद्धों को गहरे जल के निकट अकेला न छोड़ें। हर वर्ष विसर्जन के दिन दुर्घटनाएँ होती हैं — सतर्कता भी सेवा है।
साधना-दृष्टि से नियम व सावधानियाँ
- स्वास्थ्य पहले: मधुमेह, गर्भावस्था, रक्तचाप या किसी रोग की स्थिति में निर्जल व्रत न करें। फलाहार लें, दवा कभी बंद न करें। शास्त्र में आपद्धर्म का स्पष्ट प्रावधान है।
- तुलसी दल एक दिन पूर्व: पूजन हेतु तुलसी दल पहले से तोड़कर रख लें; चतुर्दशी की संध्या व विशेष तिथियों पर तुलसी तोड़ने से परंपरा में परहेज़ किया जाता है।
- सूत्र टूट जाए तो: भय या अपराध-बोध न पालें। उसे बहते जल में विसर्जित करें अथवा तुलसी के मूल में रख दें। श्रद्धा टूटने से कुछ नहीं टूटता।
- पुराना सूत्र: अगले वर्ष नया सूत्र धारण करते समय पुराना उतारकर जल में विसर्जित करें — कूड़े में कभी न डालें।
- कोई गारंटी नहीं: यदि कोई “अनंत सूत्र से 21 दिन में धन” जैसा दावा करे, तो वह शास्त्र नहीं, विपणन है। व्रत का फल श्रद्धा, आचरण व निरंतरता से जुड़ा है — किसी सौदे से नहीं।
- दान अनिवार्य अंग है: इस दिन अन्न, वस्त्र या यथाशक्ति द्रव्य का दान परंपरा में व्रत का अभिन्न भाग माना गया है। बिना दान के व्रत को अधूरा कहा गया है।
एक और परंपरा — दस लक्षण पर्व का समापन
यह उल्लेखनीय है कि दिगम्बर जैन परंपरा में इसी तिथि को दस लक्षण महापर्व का समापन होता है, जिसमें उत्तम क्षमा से लेकर उत्तम ब्रह्मचर्य तक दस धर्मों का दस दिन तक अनुशीलन किया जाता है। एक ही तिथि पर दो परंपराओं का समापन-पर्व होना भारतीय संस्कृति की उस साझा लय का सुंदर उदाहरण है, जहाँ अंत सदैव क्षमा, विसर्जन और विनम्रता पर आकर ठहरता है।

What ‘Ananta’ Means — the Heart of This Vrat
‘Ananta’ means that which has no beginning and no end. In Puranic tradition this is the form of Vishnu reclining in yoga-nidra on Shesha in the ocean of milk — and Shesha Himself is called Ananta. Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi is the day dedicated to this infinite form.
It belongs to the Chaturmas cycle. On Devshayani Sri Hari went to rest; on Parivartini He turned to the other side; and on Anant Chaturdashi the sadhak worships that resting Infinite and ties his own resolve into a thread so that it stays remembered. The essence is simple — faith in what is infinite, and respect for what has been given.
The Anant Sutra — Why Fourteen Knots
The signature object of this vrat is the Anant Sutra — a thread of raw cotton or silk with fourteen knots, coloured with turmeric or kumkum.
- Why fourteen: tradition takes them as symbols of the fourteen bhuvanas (seven upper and seven lower worlds) — the Infinite that pervades every one of them. Some traditions also connect them to the vow of observing the vrat for fourteen years.
- How to make it: take clean raw cotton thread, dye it with turmeric, kumkum or saffron water, dry it and tie fourteen knots. A sutra prepared at home is considered best.
- Offer first, wear after: the sutra is first placed at the feet of Lord Vishnu and is worn only after the puja and mantra. Simply tying a thread without worship is not the traditional practice.
- Which arm: in the prevalent tradition men wear it on the right arm and women on the left. Regional and family customs differ — follow your own kulachara.
Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step
- Morning bath & sankalpa: rise in Brahma muhurta and bathe. Facing east or north, take the sankalpa — waterless, fruit-only or one-meal fast, decided by your own strength and health.
- Setting the altar: spread a yellow cloth on a chowki. Place a kalash and upon it the image or idol of Vishnu / Ananta. Tradition also places a symbolic seven-hooded Shesha figure made of kusha or darbha grass.
- Worship of the sutra: keep the fourteen-knotted thread on a plate before the Lord. Offer sandal paste, akshat, flowers, dhoop-deep and tulsi leaves through shodashopachara, or panchopachara as your capacity allows.
- Naivedya: panchamrit, seasonal fruit, coconut and sweets. In many regions items are offered in the count of fourteen — half to the Lord, half kept as prasad.
- Hearing the katha: after the puja, read or listen to the Anant Vrat Katha. Without the katha the vrat is traditionally considered incomplete.
- Wearing the sutra: tie the thread while reciting the dharana mantra (men right arm, women left). Then give daan according to your capacity.
- Parana: complete the fast with sattvic food after the evening puja. Those on a complete fast do parana the next morning.
Authentic Mantras
Anantarupe viniyojitatma hy-anantarupaya namo namaste ||Anant Sutra dharana mantra — traditionally recited while tying the thread
Meaning: “O Vasudeva, lift me up — I am drowning in the vast ocean of endless samsara. My mind is fixed upon Your infinite form; to that infinite form, salutations again and again.” That is the whole prayer of this vrat — no bargain, only surrender.
The Vrat Katha — a Story About What Not to Do
Tradition links this katha to the Mahabharata: when Yudhishthira asked for relief during the hardship of exile, Lord Krishna described the glory of the Anant Vrat and narrated this account.
Sushila, daughter of the sage Sumantu, was married to the rishi Kaundinya. On the way she saw women observing the Anant Vrat, learnt the vidhi and reverently wore the Anant Sutra herself. Prosperity followed in their home. But Kaundinya, seeing the thread, said in pride that this abundance was the fruit of his own tapas and effort, not of any thread — and he removed the sutra and cast it disrespectfully into the fire. Gradually all the prosperity was lost. In remorse Kaundinya wandered from forest to forest; finally, through repentance, prayer for forgiveness and fourteen years of sincere observance of the Anant Vrat, his lost well-being and peace returned.
Ganesh Visarjan — the Close of Ganeshotsav
The same day marks the concluding visarjan of the ten-day Ganeshotsav. Ganesh Chaturthi was on 14 September 2026; the tenth day is 25 September, Anant Chaturdashi. Families who install for one-and-a-half, three, five or seven days perform visarjan on their own predetermined day.
Visarjan Vidhi
- Perform the formal uttar puja in the morning — bath, cloth, sandal paste, durva, modak and naivedya.
- Offer prayers for forgiveness for any lapse during the ten days of seva, then do the aarti.
- Send along a small bundle of akshat, durva and modak; some families also add curd-rice or five fruits.
- Lift the idol (never drag it) and carry it in procession with the face turned east or north.
- At the water body, circumambulate three times, offer namaskar and the prayer for return, then immerse slowly into the water.

Eco-Friendly Visarjan — This Too Is Dharma
- Choose a clay idol. Plaster of Paris and chemical colours do not dissolve and harm aquatic life — polluting the very water the shastras call sacred is a contradiction.
- Immersion at home in a large vessel or bucket is fully valid. Pour the dissolved water into a plant pot or at the root of tulsi, never into a drain.
- Do not put puja waste, polythene, thermocol or decorations into the water — separate them and hand them to the municipal collection point or designated kund.
- Never leave children or the elderly alone near deep water. Accidents happen every visarjan day — vigilance is also seva.
Rules & Cautions from a Sadhana Standpoint
- Health first: do not attempt a waterless fast with diabetes, pregnancy, blood pressure issues or any illness. Take fruit, and never stop your medication. The shastras clearly provide for aapaddharma.
- Pluck tulsi a day earlier: keep tulsi leaves ready in advance; tradition avoids plucking tulsi on Chaturdashi evening and certain tithis.
- If the sutra breaks: carry no fear or guilt. Immerse it in flowing water or place it at the root of tulsi. Nothing breaks unless faith breaks.
- The old sutra: remove it while wearing the new one next year and immerse it in water — never discard it in the trash.
- No guarantees: if someone promises “wealth in 21 days through the Anant Sutra,” that is marketing, not shastra. The fruit of a vrat rests on faith, conduct and continuity — not on a transaction.
- Daan is an integral part: giving grain, cloth or means according to capacity is traditionally an inseparable limb of this vrat. Without daan, the vrat is called incomplete.
Another Tradition — the Close of Das Lakshan Parva
It is worth noting that in the Digambara Jain tradition this same tithi concludes the Das Lakshan Mahaparva, ten days of contemplating ten dharmas from uttam kshama (supreme forgiveness) to uttam brahmacharya. Two traditions concluding on one tithi is a beautiful illustration of that shared Indian rhythm in which endings always come to rest on forgiveness, letting go and humility.
